You say "look, it doesn't and I don't want any of this to be personal." If I may, let me point out that you're being a hyprocite, asking me to do one thing while you behave in a completely different way. I criticize a car you have nothing to do with, and as a result, you criticize me, my work, and my character. You suggest my work is only for attention, you call me a hack, a monster, and say my work never comes to fruition. You suggest I'm just here to make money and upset people, and nothing more. And then you tell me to show some respect? I agree. It doesn't have to be like that. Want to start with a clean slate here? Because what this entire discussion continues to ignore is any of the positives about the 308 and what we have in common. Obviously I like the 308, I've got more invested into one than almost anyone else in here, both with respect to finances as well as blood, sweat, and tears. ~115 episodes later and I've worked diligently to teach my viewers the methods, reasons, and concepts behind every decision I make, I try to inspire people to pick up tools and work, and I try to remind everyone that I'm just a normal guy, and anyone can build the car of their dreams. The car of my dreams clearly isn't the car of yours, but trust me when I say that's a good thing. I'm trying my best to contribute positively to the car community. If some ribbing of the original 308 is the overall expense, I think that's a pretty good net gain.
this should be a fascinating thread but is unfortunately turning into a waste with all this arguing. just dont engage him anymore and tell us about where the build is going, future plans, wish list, costs, etc. plenty of us are truly interested
Image Unavailable, Please Login Well, I was really hoping to get to the dyno this week, but my friends and family all politely reminded me that I haven't been watching the calendar and that it's Thanksgiving this week, so more than likely I'm looking at early-mid next week to get it on the dyno. We'll start slow, probably hit 500hp or so and get the motor started on at least some version of a break-in process. We'll come back for the full 1000 later. I think the suspension is pretty well set and ready for prime time short of a full alignment. I think I want to add some secondary supports for the new shock towers in the rear, and perhaps some gusseting for the LCA mounts on the chassis as well, just for peace of mind. I don't see it being very likely, but if I get my ducks in a row, I'd like to take the car out to Buttonwillow on the 10th for an initial shakedown. Realistically it'll be slow, boring laps as I build confidence in the car. But it's a necessary step! Wish list for the car at the moment is pretty slim. I'd like a well-fitting carbon engine cover since removal is currently a chore. The rest of the to-do list: I need to finish up the roll bar as well before we get out to the track, and get it bolted or welded in. I might just re-do it entirely at this point, as I don't plan on running the headliner. I also need to get the driver's seat moved a bit forward, as my leg is a bit too extended on clutch disengagement.
Is plan for it to be steetable? Does it have catalytic converters and will it be emissions compliant? As for cage, will it be half only so don't need helmet?
Cost isn't something I'm ready to dive into yet. It will be streetable in a physical sense. A legal sense? No. It won't have emissions equipment, and I'm sure it fails to pass other laws as well (such as the headlight height requirement, although I think it fails in factory form.). No HVAC here.
@kcabpilot and @M.Burroughs You guys are getting a bit personal so our recommendation is to tone it down. Much appreciated!
Mike- I've been watching the YT vids since the beginning of the project. It's been something different and something interesting. Certainly seen the subs and views grow, which really says that, in addition to working your ass off to have the resulting car you wanted, that the effort on the YT end has been a success as well. Congrats. I'll keep watching. ps: please don't tell kcabpilot how heavy and underpowered the Citabria/Decathlon/SuperD is! (sorry kcab, but step up to a Pitts man!, haha, just messin with you, I've got lots of Super Decathlon time, great airplanes).
Well my apologies to everyone, maybe I did get a bit too wrapped up over another's differing views and since it doesn't appear to bother anyone else, my bad. @JasonS - my newest project is a '46 GC-1B Swift, it's gonna need a lot of work.
81,000+ views for this thread man, come on, let's not just assume we didn't 'bother' anyone LOL and I do appreciate both of your views and both of your guys technical comments
Wow, that is probably the most profound post I've seen on this forum. Bravo to all of us gearheads all!!
Watched latest episode re rims and my take is 5 spoke look much better. I guess the 3 spoke are famous jdm and match motor but don't match car itself.
I had covid over the last week and was quarantined to the back bedroom and so I finally binged watched the entire build from beginning to yesterday. I did bump the play speed to 1.5X though. I found the build fascinating and admired the skills both brought and gained along the way. In the end it is an amalgamation of parts that uses a Ferrari body, chassis, and steering rack but is fabricated from there, more of a tribute to Pininfarina style than continuing to be a Ferrari. Yes, it was a shame to start with a good looking B, but good cars die for various reasons. I'd much rather have a 308 sacrificed to this level of enthusiasm than to be abandoned under a tarp in a barn so that it can be rusted slowly, eaten by mice, then bought by one of the exotic wrecking yards and lost forever. For sure I think the aesthetic is a bit much for me. The body kit grew on me, but the aero is too much. The three spoke wheels look simply awful, I'm glad they didn't fit, but I feel for him putting so much effort into them to have them fall flat. I've been there and it sucks. Just like the A-arms, I've thrown away at least the first version of my fabrication projects many times. I also shook my head at all the times he said things about making it street legal or how he wanted something so he could street it regularly. In California? Yeah, I don't think so. If you'd started with a 1975 GT4 you'd have a chance, but that's not passing any inspections of any kind for legality. But I think it's going to be a great race car and show car. Yeah, I'd put the wing and splitter in a dumpster, but overall I like the car and appreciate what he's done.
Thanks! It's exciting to see it making power and to hear it screaming, finally. There's a lot of power left on the table but I'm not hugely concerned about making it other than to follow through on the initial promise to crack 1,000 at the wheels. 810whp ain't shabby though! The engine is really happy. It'll have a beautiful powerband with a significantly smaller G30-770 turbo on it. I wish the audio captured the way it sounds in person, because the reaction every time is "man, this sounds outstanding in real life, it's nothing like it sounds on youtube." But my recording equipment just can't capture it.
And for those that don't like it with the aero package on, here's some pics with it off. "Street" mode. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
@M.Burroughs by any chance do you still have the fenders you cut off the car? If so I'd like to talk to you about getting them.
