How sad. He did a fantastic job for Ferrari after Gilles died and I think was loved by everyone in the team.

So sad. You could tell how he was mentally declining in interviews in the past couple of years...

    Rest in Peace, Patrick.

I live in the same city, I saw him a couple of times but never dared to talk to him.
He was physically declining quickly the last five years.
Really sad to see this ..

RIP. He will not be forgotten - he was there for the Scuderia in difficult times.

I'm sure he'd have liked it if you said hello...

I enjoyed hearing him talk, even in his latter years, he really tried still.

I took this photo of Patrick Tambay 7 May 1983 in Ouchy, Switzerland. He used to live in Switzerland for several years.
    RIP.

It was great fun to see him in action. He raced hard and he lived with class, one of those drivers it might have been interesting to have dinner with and not talk about cars. RIP.

At the same time, in looking at the pictures of him with his cars...it is impossible not to comment on how much better looking the F1 cars were compared to today's hybrid toasters.

He raced for McLaren, Ferrari and Renault but also did 4 Le Mans races, his only finish was 4th in '89 with the Silk Cut Jaguar.

I knew Patrick a bit, not closely but enough to have a conversation. I remember running into him in Montreux CH after not seeing him for 2-3 years and saying "salut Patrick!" and he just turned and looked shocked and without missing a beat "Hey, how are you, long time!" I also know his son Adrian, who is a good driver, sadly did not get to F-1 but is still very good. A sad day, Patrick was always someone who was just a nice guy, never saw him not be open and accommodating. I remember talking with him at Detroit in 86 when he was driving for Beatrice Haas... he was not enjoying racing much.... truly one of the nicest guys has left us. at least now he is in peace.... and he did get to see his grand baby too before going.

Never forgot his awesome victory in Germany 1982; Gilles already gone and Pironi badly injured in practice at that race. Patrick raced like a champ and his victory that day lifted SF from the doldrums. RIP.

I saw him leaving Retromobile as I was arriving in recent years, I think he had just done a book signing and he did not look well or happy at all, a sad sight.

His was a great person, no one ever had a bad word against him. His two wins were hugely cathartic for Ferrari and he spoke of how in Imola he felt on a mission for Gilles. Now the pain has gone, may he rest in peace.

Here he is on the right with Prost and Arnoux visiting Pironi in hospital in the autumn of 1982 after Didier's Hockhenheim crash...into the back of Prost unsighted in the rain and Patrick's win the next day.

He really should have won more races, and in 82, had he did not had the pinched nerve/ back issues- he could have won the Championship... a long shot but it was possible.
