Very easy to remove the headrest with no need to remove any part of the seat.

Spray a LITTLE silicon spray (not WD40) down the side of the two chrome rods with the fine straw.

Get a tea towel and slide it under the headrest between it and the seat, if it's a GTS remove the roof, makes things a lot easier and then just grab both ends of the towel and pull it up from either side with a bit of force.

Headrest should loosen and move up.

Move it up and down to get the silicon spray around the locking mechanism to make it easier to move again later.

The last notch is a 90deg cut in the 2 rods so it will not come out unless you move the pins or a ball I don’t know what system is in my 1988
328,the headrest moves up and down no problem but I want themOUT

You have to take the covering off the back of the seat to get to the mechanism.

You do NOT have to remove the back of the seat. The spring rod in under the foam so you still have to locate it and press it in to clear the notch in the headrest support rods.
Did you try to push in the internal spring rod with your thumbs as I referenced in my above post?

GOOD INFO! I'll try that next time I remove the headrests. With luck, I'll never have to! :)

While its correct you should be able to depress the locking clips and remove the head rests I could not get it to work for me. There are threads on removing the head rests which include aprox location of clips. You press on the back of the seat where the clips are located. Felt like I was going to break my thumbs or tear the leather so I gave up and removed the back panel and loosened the leather so I could reach underneath. I was dying the seats anyways. I also ground the bottom detent to a 45 degree angle so its easy to remove now.

Guess I'll go back to removing the seat back like I did last time...if I ever have to do it again! :) It was quite easy and it sounds like pushing the lock clips isn't!
