Hey folks, I've got a question. In this moment I have a full straight pipes dekat Kline inconel exhaust, I love the way it sounds but I feel like I've lost a bit the high pitch note.

Do you think I can reach the F1 sound by replacing the Kline 4-1 headers with the OEM 4-2-1?

Is it good or bad for the performance to do so?

Yes the 4-2-1 headers are important for the f1 pitch. I wouldn’t run OEM headers unless you had them rebuilt as they are well known to blow out. I had tubi on mine which are 4/2/1 and now going back to OEM for originality but I had them rebuilt fully.

As much as I like my Tubi headers, if I’m honest, the standard headers just sound a little better. My guess is that the thinner tubing of oem headers makes for better sound.

As far as I know, my OEM headers are in a good shape and they're not cracked.

To be honest Tubi makes overrated products, heard a friend with a full dekat exhaust and it sounded awful.

My OEM headers were in good shape I believe, as the car does not have many miles on it and still doesn’t. But I didn’t want to take any chances with my motor so I had custom 4-2-1 headers built in slightly bigger tubing with thicker and better stainless steel. This is one of those cases when it is not a matter if it will go bad, it is a matter of when it will go bad.

Mine had no leaks or cracks yet, I removed a few years back and installed Tubi preventatively. But now seeing the metal I’m very glad I didn’t run them any longer!

Did you wrap the pipes under the clamshell with anything? Looks very nice.

The stock headers will fail over time = stock sucks.

The higher pitch comes from smaller diameter tubes. The reason the after market headers and exhaust make more power is because they get rid of the restrictions from the smaller diameter stock pipes. As a result you do get a little bit deeper exhaust note. Also 4-1 headers will give a louder exhaust and a true old school F1 sound. The material used to make the headers and exhaust also contributes. 302 stainless sounds different than titanium, which sounds different than inconel. They all resonate at different frequencies. The other thing is harmonics that occur when the two exhaust banks merge. The y-pipe in the 355 contributes to the F129’s sound. Companies like S-Line have made exhausts with a resonance chamber that mix the pulses and give the F1 note because of the harmonics (helmholtz resonance) created inside the chamber.

My opinion is do not go back to stock. Stick with the 4-1 headers and find a different exhaust.

Purchased my 355 in 2013 with 18k miles from an exotic dealer. Smoke test at first engine out in 2016 of OEM was clear; but I did not open up the heat shields to determine the condition of the pipes. Ultimately went ahead and replaced them with OEM headers as a preventative measure. Last engine out was done in 2021, headers looked great and no issues with 23k miles (I know, I need to drive it more).

Many options, really like the look of many of the choices made here - works of art that look great on these very enjoyable vehicles.
