Yea, the "buy, crash, resell" technique will not end well I predict! lol
Erik- Actually we love to shift, we just do not need our left foot to do it. Mine has never been in Auto in 14 years.
I had a Maserati 4200 Cambiocorsa with an automated manual. I actually loved it and it shifted smooth and fine while driving. When coming back to the 550, it felt like it was a ten year older car in many ways. Now after ten years of 550 ownership, I just realize it is an advanced "olabil" as we say in Norwegian, which is the downhill toy cars without an engine kids build out of stuff in dad's garage. But man, it really give me reliable simple fun. And perfect for me to modify with my small improvements. The 575M is how the 550 should have been when it came out in the first place. But little Ferrari did not have time of money to build it like that back in 1996. It is what it is. And it is plenty fast enough for me. Sure accelleration is more "legit" than top speed. But I enjoy driving fast for long periods much more than accellerating for a short period. I considder to remove the catalyzers to get more old school musical sound to it.
Guys - this past Sunday we had another 550 close RNM and I've been slow to do the synopsis..... This was an "interesting" one because it RNM'd on BaT March 2021 at $114k.... here is that synopsis from back then https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/posts/147808808/ It needed a belt service at the time..... The current seller bought it shortly thereafter 5/7/21 on Hemmings Auctions for $123,000 and then NEVER did the belt service (9.5 years since last) and suffered what looked like a minor but CarFax-reported rear end accident....had the bumper/damage fixed and is now selling. 1997 550 with 28,711 an increase of 1,450 miles since 27,261 miles when last on BaT -- RNM today 12/18/22 at $112k out of Hendeson, NV +) ZFFZR49A5V0109577 +) 109577 +) Rosso Corsa over beige +) Service records since 2005 – STILL needs a major belt service (last done 5/27/13) +) strong maintenance investment generally by prior seller -- current seller did nothing material +) Post applied shields, daytona style seats with typical driver bolster wear, carpeted shelf, tools +) ONLY 1 Clone Fob +) This auction RNM: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1999-ferrari-550-maranello-23/ +) May 2021 SOLD Hemmings auction: https://www.classic.com/a/hemmings-auctions-JWbQXnK/lots/1997-ferrari-maranello-550-WvwldXp/ +) March 2021 RNM BaT auction: https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1997-ferrari-550-maranello-13/ Several of us had been commenting and then also talking privately. Given how crazy BaT has been I wouldn't have been surprised to see $130 but others privately thought $110 (which I agreed with in the current market -- but again prior to the COVID shenanigans this wouldn't have been a six-digit-car). Its really easy to "armchair coach" these but if it had been me, I'd have lifted the reserve to see if it got any more thrust and then let it go and take a small loss from the $123k plus fees the seller had bought it at. He made no real material investment in the car, got 1,450 miles of fun (which is great) and the tainted carfax wasn't going to help. Interested in anyone else sharing thoughts. Next 550 currently slated to end Tuesday the 27th..... Have a safe holiday!
Today we had a nice/fun 550 hammer with a strong result on BaT - the seller took a lesson from @root on how to be a great attentive seller, answer the questions, and had a really nice car. The market responded that a well presented, active seller with low miles, good options and long term ownership is the "winning formula". I know its not surprising to many but the difference between "driver" and "investor" grade 550's really have a wide price range. Cute that we again saw a 550 with VIN ending in 575 Buyer mentioned they had a similar spec that they sold in 2014 and this was an emotional return for him (active buyer and seller on BaT) hopefully he will check in with us here. Was also fun because he included an "extra"......From the Auction -- Reserve has been met – car will sell. As an added bonus I am going to include this Girard Perregaux F360GT watch. Limited edition (360 pieces) titanium 40mm – rare red stitch crocodile band. All box and papers included. Mint condition – valued over $5,000. 2000 550 SOLD $225,000 with 16,774 miles out of Los Angeles, CA with a California title and a May 2022 clean smog cert +) ZFFZS49A6Y0119575 and Assembly 36605 +) Rosso Corsa over beige - seller bought August 2003 and put 13k of 17k miles on the car +) Contrasting Daytonas, quilted shelf, shields, ferrari car cover, alpine stereo +) Novitec "crowd favorites" and also included the original OEM wheels +) From the auction: A timing-belt service was carried out in May 2022, when interior buttons and switches were refinished. EDIT "no expense" $26k spent. +) From the auction: A Fuchs exhaust system has been added. +) Windshield had a chip repair (not sight line) - driver bolster normal wear +) one clone fob with leather holder +) 119575 Hard to find much to not be happy with on this one. The color combo always seems to do well. I would assume seller and buyer were both happy.
Yea, I have and have had a bunch of GP pour ferrari's - cool watches. Too small to wear these days, but so pretty (to me at least). When he did that I was really on his side. But as you say, he learned from the last few. BAT is an experience based sales site, he did it right.
Was glad the seller did well today and the buyer got a fantastic value for a really nice car and watch to sweeten the deal as if that was even necessary. But was really cool of the seller to make that offer. Confirms to me that Maranello buyers are well informed and real picky lot, but willing to open their wallets when the right car shows up. If I were in the market I would have been really tempted. Lovely car.
I love seeing the money come out! As ours is one owner since new with records and all the jazz. Not that we are selling! Just nice to know what its worth!
Very nice car. Did look like it had some paint work in a couple of the close up pix...but I could be mistaken...
Come on. Tell us THE number you would sell it for. I am just curious because I have the same thinking like you!!
Here is a Beautiful Blue 599 Converted Example for Sale on BAT - https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2007-ferrari-599-gtb-fiorano-40/
No question this will be interesting to follow!! Beautiful 599. A Fabio exhaust on that one and ypu have a 599 GTO manual so to say...
For us, there is no #. Dad bought the car when he sold his company, and I was in college. I spec'ed the car and was involved in all the steps. Now my 18 year old drives and enjoys it too. It is truly one of the few things that is just "part of the family" and will never be sold. We have/had race cars and other sports cars. We have 3 cars in the family that are on the "not to sell" list for various emotional reasons. It would take Lusso money to get us to consider!
Lovely story! You are lucky you got to spec a 550 at that age. Please post some pictures of it. Are your son racing around in it? I bet that's a cool ride for a teenager. I have about the same feeling about my own. I have been dreaming of a F12, but to sell the 550 Maranello....?! No. Will not happen. Especially after all those great trips. Will live unlucky the rest of my life and miss it badly. HAPPY NEW YEAR. Erik Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
This car was just for sale on a different auction site... I would have to look back and see to remember which one. It did 285k if I remember correctly. RNM
Image Unavailable, Please Login Here is one. Yes, he drives it pretty frequently. Although like teens do - he is in trouble now, so NO driving! lol Funny back story. We bought from Ogner Motorcars (in Calabasas) and we were the 1st 550 for them (maybe 1st in CA). The factory kept delaying and delaying. Our dealer (Italian guy) flew to the factory and took "gifts" (I was at UCLA at the time, playing sports - so I sent him a ton of UCLA athletic dept swag). That seemed to help. But they were soooooo far behind, they finally said to us "if you keep asking for the car, we will sell it to someone else, we will send it when its ready" lol - having lived in and speaking Italian, I wasnt offended and we just waited.... I think that year we had 3 550's are Monterrey for car week, ours and 2 others at Concorso Italiano. Was pretty cool. Of course that year a guy offered to sell me his Lusso for 125K and I passed (college kid without that much coin to my own name yet). lol
Thanks! That is why it is "in the family" it is just something that has too much tied to it to ever put a $ value on it. Money comes and goes, but memories and experiences are forever and unless the $ runs out, there will never be a need to let this one go! It also marked a milestone in dad's life. He had been a sportscar guy but was limited to more affordable choices. This was a dream for him. He came from nothing. I am not working my ass off to move from the "Germans" into my own Italian (one that I buy myself). Although the 550 is "ours" it is not the same as being able to write that check and know you achieved something! My only kid is about to enter college, so the goal is to make pay that and then buy a second stallion to sit next to the 550. Sadly the 2008 global financial crisis reset me to zero, but I am quickly getting back there!
