Is it normal to have some difficulty in pressing the R button of a 2006 430 with F1 Transmission to engage the reverse gear?
    or.... is it just me??
First winter with this beast... does feel better when it is warmer....

It’s the difficulty in the physical pressing of the button, or does it press fine, but the transmission won’t engage? The latter is a problem sometimes experienced with the car very warm, which may be an actuator issue. But this probably isn’t relevant to you as I have not heard about that problem with a cold or cool car.

If you’re having trouble actually pressing the button in far enough, I wonder, does it have sticky buildup from the finish deteriorating that may be jamming?

I used to drive my car in very cold weather and never experienced the issue.

Could be that he has the rubber button version of the reverse and the rubber is just harder from age and when it’s cold out? I know some years had rubber buttons vs plastic from factory.

Pressing the button seems to be the issue..not sure of the cold just makes the button rubber hard and hence is difficult to push in?? or...something else. I am not sure what is under it but in summer, the button seemed to move a bit and was easy to activate Reverse. Good point about the sticky issue... will talk to the mechanic I deal with..
    very helpful.. thank you

If that is the case. You can upgrade to the StickyRX setup. It’s not cheap but will convert you to plastic buttons and never worry about the stickies.

stickybuttonfix is also a great (and less costly) alternative. It's also a rubber button so you still get that soft feel.

They don't look rubber to me. it also seems they are almost double-shot key caps but like engraved vs smooth.

They are double shot. First in the white letters and then overmolded with rubber. I have them, they are rubber. Or at least not hard plastic.

Because of the differences in durometer of the two materials, you feel a slight difference, but it's not pronounced and they are (from what I gather) intended to be flush. At least to the best of my recollection. I don't typically run my fingers over these buttons except for a quick push.

I replaced with stickyRX buttons as mine felt like it was taking more effort and I hated the peeling when backlit. Picky I know.

Mine are plastic and slightly convex but matches the other buttons and engages more positively.

Looking at the factory button there is a pillow underneath (for lack of a better term) and I felt like it was starting to crease more with age. Kept the factory harness but happier with the stickyRX even though not cheap.

For additional reference, my buttons (‘05 Spider) are hard plastic. R is somewhat concave; Auto is flat. The buttons travel 1/2” or so to actuate; they do not deflect like a membrane keypad. Pictured below - I removed the panel and Auto button in order to clean it as it was a sticky mess. The R button for whatever reason has virtually no tackiness to the finish so far. I believe these to be stock and not previously swapped or cleaned.
