So, let me say at the outset how sorry I am to even be asking the question.
It's really "not donw" in polite social circles....:D :D

I have had a huge personal loss of material possesions, and while distressting and depressing, it's "Just Stuff"..

But, signatures of the deceased are not replaceable, so what is "replacement value"??
I really grapple with that although my insurer does recognize "collectibles".....

This is really a question I shrug my shoulders at answering, so I throw it out to the collective here, besides, these people, we love them, they won for Ferrari, they were our frriends......:eek:ur idols and icons.

There's no value to that, and no amount of money can replace them.
Memories...our lives...........you see where it gets sad.

I lost the R&T original of Phil Hill and photographer John Lamb (Red Car or the set, I sold the others), so that's TWO sigs on one piece.

I lost the Tribute to Chinetti Event held in Colorado, signed by Phil Hill the Hostess Denise Mc Cluggage and the photograper of Mr. Chinetti over a V12, but Tom Burnside.....Two gone, is Tom Burnside still living! 3 x signatures

I'm also selling some of my art collection that thankfully survived, so those prints might have a Phil Hill or a Coco Chinettti signature.
Is there a "Rule of Thumb"??

I lost a signed guitar by Johnny Winter....
I was mainly proud at how clearly he signed it, and he was sober.....then, he was dead.
Losing stuff like that is very hard for me, for some reason

I've seen Enzo's sig add $300 but then we start trying to tell if it was his purple pen or Brenda Vernor with a rubber stamp in purple..:D :D

And that's a joke, I love Ms. Vernor and don't think she even HAD a stamp pad.

Flood in the apartment..originals were water saturated for two days in my absence and destroyed.

Some might be possible to salvage via digital trickery but really, why bother???

I had Niki Lauda sign the cover of my program cover for the 1975 U.S. Grand Prix, but his signature has disappeared entirely since then! His pen must have been loaded with disappearing ink.....

Unfortunately some inks tend to fade on their own, and some also are extremely light sensitive. Just general indoor fluorescents, LEDs and other light can affect them. I also found out the hard way!

Virtually all of my stuff(with the exception of hard back books) is stored in water tight containers and in the dark. If we leave town even for a day or two I turn-off the water.

I have a lot of Nicholas Watts prints displayed in my home which are signed by the artist and by many of the drivers featured in the scene. Nearly all are signed in pencil and not one has faded even slightly, much better then pen or Texta in my opinion.

I also keep the blinds of my library permanently closed to stop the light fading the book spines- good idea about the water proof bags.

Yes, many artists use pencil for their signatures as well as for the drivers, etc. I have some serigraphs and originals signed in pencil. Pencil never fades, has been used for hundreds of years. Also, a good old Bic ball point pen is extremely stable & long lasting too. I have a number of ball point pen signed photos, and they are all perfect. Some signatures signed with various markers fade and some don't, so you have to be careful with any 'marker' signed item.

"Shadows on Mulsanne" is actually one of my surviving pieces, and it's now for sale, to fund recovery.

Also had a wonderful chat with Jay Koka today.
He called back before I even had my inventory list ready!!!

    So, Jay Koka is TCB!
Thankfully my huge canvas of 0846 at Daytona, (actual size) is oneof the highest painting in the unit!

In my collection I have a few Mike Hawthorn autographed photos as well as quite a few Phil Hill autographed photos. Generally Hawthorn autographs are higher value than Hill since Hill was around a lot longer and signed many more photos & other items. Hawthorn signed photos are definitely rarer. Simple rules of supply & demand. Values on all autographed photos depend and vary based on a number of factors. Some of which are:
Who/what/where the image is of, then the actual image itself (some images are great and some are not).
    Size of the print.
Older in period photos with old early signature or is it a much later print signed after racing career.
Quality of the actual signature, and what type of ink... ball point pen or later marker, and is it faded or not.
The Photographer with signature or stamp on the backside... i.e. an unknown photographer or a well known such as Geoff Goddard, Bernard Cahier, Tom Burnside, Jesse Alexander, etc.

Completely agree. Hawthorn died in 1959, while Phil Hill was with us until 2008. As a result, I would say there are roughly 10X the number of Hill signed items out there compared to Hawthorn, with a broadly similar level of interest or demand. Values and pricing reflect this accordingly.
