I just realized that while major (30k) service discussions/debates are rampant in V8 and V12 Ferrari circles, I've never seen discussions about how they're handled in the six cylinder world.

Searches in this subforum yielded little results.

So, what's the deal with Dinos? Do you still follow the 5 (or 7, or 3...ha!) year rule for belt replacements? Or are you guys blessed with a timing chain? What is considered a "major" service for a 206/246? And how much do you expect to spend for major maintenance?

This is a list of tasks taken from the factory's service item lists for a A (minor) and B (major) services. My dealer has alternated between the two annualy. The engine is chain driven so there is no requirement for a belt service.

    Funny.

I had the car at the dealer often, as we were doing repairs for the 1st couple three years I owned it to put right all of the "deferred maintenance" the prior owner let pile up, so I don't recall our doing something that could be called a major service, as they were ALL major, at least for my wallet.

But as I think back, basically I'd drop the car off in late November, have them do an annual maintenance when they could, and it was generally well under $1K. They'd store it upstairs at Algar until the Spring and I'd go pick it up. (they didn't charge me for storage.)

I just looked at my old repair bills. Service was a couple hundred bucks for oil change/brake fluid flush. Tune up was closer to $600 the one time we re-jetted the carbs, etc.

Getting the carbs to their happy place seems to have been something of an ongoing project, that took more than one fairly expensive visit.

What I found interesting at the time was the mechanic would pull the motor to make his job easier on a lot of repairs. Said it could be done in the car, but was easier for him not to, and he didn't charge me the 3 or 4 hours it took him to R and R the motor each time. (Also made keeping the motor clean really easy.)

Iain - Item 21 B Service. Thats a new one on me and highly recommended NOT to do it. You risk breaking the studs and then your up to your neck in it!

The A list is a waste of time, I do all my servicing, tuning and repairs. Have done for the last 24 years and the car runs like clockwork.

5A must refer to alternator belt.

I defer to your knowledge Tony ;) It is the list Ferrari produced in period for the car. The current minor service is oil and brake fluids, filters, geometry checks and visual checks of the car - tyres, brakes, cooling system, fuel system, lights etc plus road test. They don't touch the heads if there is no sign of weeping.

As you quite rightly point out - an often neglected item is the lights and electrical system for cars used very rarely.

I would certainly disagree with that schedule, time is mostly the dominant factor for most classic cars, not solely based on mileage -
