Same license plate MO 33757 as on the PF Spider (photo 1).........

I remember to have seen pics of the PF spyder in France in late 50s. Will post its as soon I’m back at home. Yes, I have too plenty of period pictures !

 

Sure.
However, which one is the car on photo two (post 11752)? And it does wear the SAME license plate MO 33757, the registration formerly used on the Pinin Farina Spider (photo one). In Italy a license plate is issued to a specific chassis number. Naturally anybody can hang a plate from one car to another one and we have seen such things more than once. But: Where is the Pinin Farina bodied Spider today or what happened to it after the 6th February 1955? Did the PF Spider go back to the factory, was it restamped with another identity, rebodied, and started a new life?

Is it safe to say that if it weren't for import duties, a lot of these renumbered cars wouldn't exist?

 

I don't want to rewrite history but yes, probably that some owners would not have ordered a new car if the factory had not allowed them to swap the identity of the new car with the one of their previous car...

 

The car pictured in this particular photo has been certified as 0424.

If you look closely at the chassis number stamping in this photo you will see underneath the 2nd digit, the "4", is a "5" and underneath the 3rd digit, the "2", is a "7".
0574 is underneath.

A number 0424 (?) on a paper and a number 0424 MD (clearly) restamped over the real (?) chassis number 0574 MD.
How much pay people for such a *certificato* ?

If you mean the serial number, it’s still a mystery but I always thought it was in 056x range...
One thing is sure, this car was raced later in South America...

 

Factory certifies cars as they last left the factory, that is the documentation they have - if any.

 

The true story about 0424/0564/0574 has been muddy at best for all the years I have chased the 500 Mondial Series II cars. I have presumed that two cars are involved, car #1 being the DuPont car and #2 being the Sbraci car.

We know that car #1 driven by DuPont was at Hyeres on 5/29/55, Liege-Rome-Leige Rally from 8/17-21/55 and subsequently in the Museum at the Autodromo di Monza for nearly 20 years.

Car #2 driven by Sbraci at Mugello 5 June 1955 and in photo below at Coppa della Consuma 4/22/56.

These events on the surface would appear to be two different cars.

The Assembly Data Sheets for 0564/0424 clearly show the annotation Variata matricola in 0424/MD as well as strike throughs in the serial number.

If Car #1 was in the museum then what car was in the photo below at the Consuma event? I don’t have the answer other than most likely 0574.

That still leaves the questions as to where are the original 0424 and 0574 (or 0564 if you believe the chassis overstamp).

Car #2 (Sbraci) was darker (red ?) and had Scaglietti badge mounted at the bottom of the Scaglietti badge.

Note also the different position of the interior mirror.

Gentlemen Drivers magazine June 2011 has a 1980 picture of René Yves Joseph in Tanger with a 500 Mondial Spyder listed as 0424 MD

 

And where's the photo? Please post.
Does it show a Pinin Farina Spider or does it show a Scaglietti Spider?
And at which 1980 event?

At the time that I found the photo (searching for something else on the internet) I did not realize the importance and therefore only copied the details in my personal database. I will try to find the pdf of the magazine again.
