George Russell says his Mercedes team has been left with a “good problem” to solve with its new W14 Formula 1 car.

Initial feedback from Russell and Lewis Hamilton has been that the new challenger has wayward car balance, but that this is far easier to solve compared to the “alarm bells ringing” in 2022 as Mercedes has made a “step in the right direction”.

Russell explained the mid-corner handling is where the balance struggles are most exposed, as the car loses grip and is overworking the tyres in the hotter temperatures.

Asked by Autosport if Russell’s desire for a more predictable car had been fulfilled, the Briton said: “The entry phase has been improved.

“I think it’s no secret when you’re watching the onboard videos that we are struggling a little bit with the balance, struggling a lot in the mid-corner.

Boy, I know it's early, but it's shaping up to be a long season unless the red cars are able to turn the dial up...

 

I bet there's a 29 or 28 in qualifying next week.

Bas just beat me to it, George Russell stopped on track.
One point of the Mercedes years of dominance were reliability, just a huge number of races that typically HAM didn't have any issues.

 

HAM still doesn't have any issues. Russel has issues. OTHER people have issues. not HAM. he's made of GOATs...or something.

Alpine's problems aren't just a slow car, but they seem to have issues getting the wheels off every time they try do a pitstop, often taken minutes to take them off!

McLaren failed to hit development targets with 2023 F1 car
McLaren has admitted it failed to hit development targets with its 2023 Formula 1 car, but is not yet sure how much that will hurt its early season form.

 

leclerc had pretty significant drop off on the hardest tyre it seems, much like post TD39 last year. RBR on the other hand happily sat continuously pounding in the lap times...

 

They can pass the Alpine when they're stuck trying to take the tyres off...

 

Ferrari really keeping their cards in hand. I'm not expecting atleast Leclerc to do any low fuel push laps even tomorrow, since he does the morning session.

 

McLaren might be the big disappointment for me this year. I can't believe they can't get collective sh*t together.

 

I'd argue the RB19 is more ready package for testing, less changes than the Ferrari, so quicker to set up. Tire deg was something they heavily focused in off season, so I'm not too worried. Reality is only seen next weekend.

 

It's really looking like a total **** show over there. With their facilities, money, talent...to deliver a car this bad is a total shambles. We moan about Ferrari (obviously it being a Ferrari forum it's our main interest), but if I was a Mclaren fan I'd hang my head in shame, as they really have no excuse at this point.

Makes their blaming of Honda for years on end seem even more shambolic.
