Sorry to keep harping on the subject but I think a few of us probably have given a conversion some thought… The other problem is I believe for those of us who don’t commute very much and actually don’t put very many miles on cars, I still think the CO2 emissions are the greatest when building a new car out of dust and not the actual driving (I have a few cars but I can only drive one at a time). The last new car I bought for myself was in 1995 when my old hand me down thunderbird caught fire with my newborn in the back seat (she’s fine btw).. I buy old cars as I can’t do anything about the emissions (for building) of cars already built. Ev’s have a higher emissions for building vs ice (at least that’s what I’ve read and makes sense, and presumably the difference is the drive train). So for me it doesn’t make sense to put a new ev drive train from emissions perspective either. (I laugh at my friends who drive new teslas - it makes them feel good but it’s their 2nd, or third car that they actually don’t really need, and new so added to CO2 output that they didn’t really need to do) But idk maybe I’m completely wrong. To be completely honest, this build has absolutely nothing to do with emissions or "green" energy. The fact is that, yes, EV's do use A LOT of energy that is produced by coal fire plants, and the mining of the rare earth minerals for the batteries. There is nothing "green" about an EV. This project's focus is on performance.
All these people getting pissy, this has already been done. But have fun. It's your car you can do what ya want.
I think it's an interesting project and I look forward to seeing the progress! Heck, you might beat Maranello to the "production" of an electric Ferrari since theirs won't be out until 2025! Good Luck!!
Yes, there are a couple out there, but my project is slightly different. The other ones used Tesla drive units, I'll be using a more modern technology. Check out Orbis Wheels, I'm using those. It's pretty cutting edge stuff.
Can you send me your email? I need a couple of parts which I'd like to purchase at the right price. Cheers
I don't agree, I have driven many old muscle cars that have been upgraded with new power and suspension. They are much easier to drive with more HP and better fuel economy. There is an old saying that "it's not the biggest engine, it's the right engine", and I agree with that. I will do my best to make this car better.
So if you take the hand made movement out of a Rolex and pop in a quartz Casio movement instead, that’s still a Rolex is it? Mmm ok.
Your analogy may have been better if you said so if you put a quartz movement behind a Rolex dial is it still a Rolex. But either way it's not the same thing and it's his car he can do what he wants with it.
There's another thread on here somewhere, this has already been done. It might offer some good information.
The analogy is sound, a watch movement does not include the ‘dial’ and yes, it’s his car and he can do what he wants. Maybe we should have listed cars like we have listed houses in the UK. I suppose every 308 or Testarossa that gets vandalised makes all the others slightly more valuable. Shame though.
You realize you are arguing against your own analogy right? But carry on. This should really piss you off then...
Well what I was actually doing was trying to see the only positive aspect of a sad scenario. But you knew that. Thanks for the video, glad to see someone taking an obviously near death Ferrari and turning it into something quite amazing! Kept the 3.0 V8, the gated shifter and the essence of the design, so basically a rebodied Ferrari along the lines of the Koenig cars or the Zagato’s of AM and Lancia. The Koenig cars I certainly don’t like, along with this one, but Zagato did some great stuff. Not sure your outlaw boys have quite the design flair of a pro styling house or the construction techniques but they all have the original ICE and that’s what matters. Of course, seeing the ‘Outlaw’ made my 308 just that little bit more valuable too, so thanks again.
Ferrari has stated that their elec car will debut in '25. 355 Schwing is beating them to it by a year or two! I seriously doubt Ferrari will become an electric motor manufacturer so HECK, Schwing's Ferrari will be as much a Ferrari as Ferraris will be!
Zero to sixty in three seconds OR 100 mile range but not both. A couple of stoplight launches and your range just dropped to 70 and oh darn, here comes a hill...
While there are many who believe the owner can do whatever to his 308 as he pleases, to some of us the 308 we have is just in our temporary custody and we have the obligation to curate the piece of Ferrari history until we pass it on to the next curator. That's also the likely the reason many people trying to keep the car as original as possible. We will all agree the electric cars are the future and Ferrari is going all electric for sure. Yet, the 308/328s are not the future but historical vehicles and going electric means it will not be a 308/328 but just a Ferrari badged car. True that it's not the first time that's being done. Some of the previous cases such as the 308 GTE might be a bit different as it's already a dead car and the scale of work needed to return it to its original state might be just too much if at all feasible. Converting a perfectly working 308 to electric is just a different story, and sad to see for some of us. What would the Ferrari community react if someone's gonna convert his 250 to electric? Yeah there are tons more 308, but still not that abundant compare with mass production cars of that era.
