Crime stats for Hawaii are pretty buried and 2019 and 2020 were the latest I could find but they listed Maui as being the worst of the islands. I was surprised by that. I expected Oahu or maybe Big Island. The high points were property crime was down by 20 or so percent but violent crime was up by over 50 percent . Overall compared to 50 states +DC Hawaii rated 14th worst. If I was a realtor crime would not be one of my selling points.

Yes. It is easy to use analysis to contruct a picture of real that is very different from the one lived by the people. In my town nearly all the crime is petty theft and almost all from folks related to each other. JoJO took Auties car without permission again. it is good to note that crime figures per capita are esp deceptive when there are around 40K adults here and 3 million tourists. Petty theft of tourist bags is the main crime here because it is so easy to do. Average all that into 40K adults and you get a deceptive figure. The crime rate went down 20% in my town because there five fewer crimes- because the family turned one brother in,

Sounds very convincing to people who have never lived there. I have. I still have a place there but have not gone in years. Got tired of the mainland white trash bums and the local animosity. I really do get the ability to turn a blind eye to what you really do not want to see. I have a sister who has it down to an art so she can convince herself it is still OK to live in the San Francisco Bay Area.

It sounds like an island thing. Probably different now, but in St Thomas, the jail kicked you in the morning because they didn’t want to feed you. You were expected to show up at night. It’s an island where are you gonna go?

Everybody was on the dole or worked for the government, same thing. Biggest problem was booze. Everybody was a drunk. If you were a trade who stayed reasonably dry, you had it made.

I see what you mean. If San Francisco is a dreadful nightmare for someone, then Maui easily could be as well. Right now prices are rising because so many rich and famous folks are moving here. It is a good time to sell. We need the space. The rest of us arent having the same experience as you . I hope you find a place that fits you .
