I just purchased a 458 What would most do here? 1) Leave it Stock 2) Valve Controller 3) Cat Back Exhaust System 4) Headers / Sport Cats / Exhaust System
I have a 2015 Spider. I kept the stock exhaust but had the valves capped so they are open. I can adjust the loudness with the gas pedal and RPM's.
Previous owner had installed a controller but I leave it in stock position all the time. If I want quiet, I use sport. If i want loud I use race. Either way if you open up the throttle it makes happy noises.
I like the sound and it is loud enough to enjoy the pop and runoff but not an eardrum bursting scream that I have heard on certain aftermarket systems. If I drop the rpms to 2500 I can relatively "sneak" into my neighborhood without attracting too much attention. However, if I want to announce my arrival, just drop down a gear, bring the RPM to 3500 and it sings.
If you purchased a Speciale, you have to get an X-pipe catback. I replaced the whole thing, but otherwise you are stuck with a loud vacuum cleaner. If you purchased an Italia/Spider, plugging the valves or getting a controller works just fine. The car sounds really good from the factory.
Valve controller. Once you have it, you may not feel any need for other exhaust mods. It’s also the most cost-effective of your alternatives to stock. Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
I recently bought a Forza controller for my new to me Spider. I'm stoked about the plan to stay quiet or not when I want. I find the ever-repeating open/close/open of the valve in stock mode annoying.
I have a 15 Italia that is stock with a valve controller. I am very satisfied sound wise with the current setup. Plenty of crackles & pitch, yet satisfactory sound modulation when desired. This car is the only 2nd of the 6 that I've owned that the exhaust remained factory.
Cat bypass pipes and a Capristo rear box with remote and OBD. It’s very loud and at high rpm is awesome. Regular driving around the closed valves make it usable. Having done cat-less my preference is probably 100 or 200 cats. I’m wanting to turn the volume down just a bit for when I cruise around vs riding it like it’s stolen. I’m currently looking for a set of 100 or 200 cats if anyone wants to offload a pair. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
I purchased S-Line Race exhaust for my Speciale several months back but have yet to put it on. I need to get around to doing it soon.
just picked up a 2013 a couple of weeks ago. i'm getting a valve controller installed next week, then will decide from there if i'm going to add an aftermarket exhaust. (i most likely will.) still on the fence whether i should get a tune to bring back the "burbles" that the 2010 - 2011 models had.
I have 200 cell cats with stock after. Really nice. Unless you open the cats up, you are not gaining performance. I may change after the cats, but no hurry.
I just had a full Kline inconel exhaust installed: headers , 200 cell cats and valvetronic exhaust. The installing shop described it as "wicked" when I called to check the status and said it was the best sounding exhaust on a 458 they had ever heard. I was more excited to pick it from the shop after the exhaust was installed than I was waiting for the delivery truck when I first bought it last year. The stock sound is excellent, probably because the engine is great, but a quality exhaust system transforms the car and experience. I suggest trying to find a local 458 friend who has one so you can hear it in person and in the car. It will definitely help you decide how much more noise you need or can tolerate.
I found the stock opening points annoying, too. It seems like Ferrari should have made the opening point require more rpm or load, because in normal driving it would open and close way too much. The Forza controller’s ability to keep it open or closed is better. Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
Yes. That is how the Capristo unit operates. Closing an open exhaust valve is an incredibly bad idea.
As illustrated above, with the Forza controller the valves can be closed. There are certain conditions where that is not advisable, those being it's a turbocharged car, or at wide open throttle/passing situations.
