Well I own a Turbo S...not sure what a fan boy is and love the car...I also own a GTC4 Lusso and now an SF90 (picked up last week) and Cayeene GT Turbo. Ordering a 296 and a Glickenhaus...so...?

So I am ordering a 296 and wanted to test drive an Artura. The 296 is hands down better. Quality, responsiveness, straight out speed, definitely sounds so much better.

  3. It should be though, right?

It's priced about 1.5x that of an Artura. MSRP to MSRP.

(But if all the reviews are accurate, the Artura probably has a better UI than the 296.)

Artura is aimed at the Teubo S segment. More exotic, more power. Can be used as a daily driver. Cost is reasonable all things considered.

296 is more supercar segment. Not meant for a daily (although one could if they wanted) premium price, premium quality.

Both great cars- just different .

i don’t know if Ferrari and mclaren planned it this way or it just happened but they really don’t have direct competitors anymore. Artura sits below the 296 and the 720 replacement will sit between 296 and SF90. It’s a segmented ladder of sorts.

I really like what Mclaren has to offer but I’m also happy that Ferrari is upping the performance of their cars. The 720 just put the 488/F8/Pista to shame in terms of performance. 765 raised the bar even more. The 296/sf90 are great additions from Ferrari and in the end the consumer comes out ahead.

Just a question to try to understand a problem that escapes me.
At what level of power do you consider that it is no longer necessary for the road ?
Because personally, even with a STO of 640 hp I don't see how it can be reasonably exploited on the road...and yet I don't have two left hands...

It’s interesting that Porsche GT3 variants are not pushing even close to this power even at prices approaching Huracan base, MC20 or a no options Artura. Seems that 500-520hp is enough for the buyers to pay way over MSRP and still rave about the car.

  7. About 100 hp, maybe less if it is a FI engine.

But that's not really the right question to ask is it when it comes to sports cars, or supercars (whatever that term means).

We buy these cars because they are toys, and when we buy toys we don't buy based on necessity, but rather on "want". For example, if I am buying a Lego set, I am not asking whether I "need" another replica F40 to build out of plastic pieces; I buy it because it is something I "want".

    Same with sports cars.

The better question to ask is how much horsepower does one want in a street legal road car?

And that question can't really be answered with absolutes because a lot of how much "power" a car effectively has a function of its weight. So with that said, for me it's about 3 to 3.5 pounds per horse. Even if it's a Cavallino horse.

That was exactly my question tinged with a bit of irony ;) !

This is for me the most important question, because the demand for hp by buyers who of course, mostly do not know how to use them, leads Ferrari to focus stupidly on power to the detriment of other factors, such as the so well understood Murray

I think it’s a very fair point and I don’t know that I have a great answer for it. I don’t think it’s all about horsepower, but more driver enjoyment, but a large portion of driver engagement is about horsepower. Not all, but a good chunk.

I used to own a Porsche RS and it had about 500 hp and I thought it was plenty fast. And then I got my 488 which had about 660 hp and I thought wow this is so much better and I thought it was also plenty fast. And then I got my 720 which is 720 hp and I thought wow this is even better and it was also plenty fast, and then I got my 765, 765 hp and I thought wow this is amazing and it’s pretty fast.

interestingly enough between the 720 and 765 I got a Ferrari Pista. Similar horsepower to the 720 but I preferred the drive of the 720. 720 lighter and more nimble. My preference was 720- not to take anything away from how brilliant the Pista was.

It’s not all about horsepower but horse power helps. I’ve never fallen in love with the F12/812 variants for the Ferrari cars. I know these are great cars and lots of folks love them, I much preferred the drive if my 488/Pista over the front engine v12. Because while they had more horsepower, they were also much heavier, not as nimble. Granted they totally serve a different segment but if I had to put my money on something, it would be in a mid engine car, not a front engine v12.

So in the end I think the perfect car is a combination of “enough” hp, “lightweight” and nimble. I can’t define what lightweight is or enough hp is. Usually the lighter the car and more powerful the car the more fun.

So yes, 296/sf90 have upped the hp game but I don’t have wheel time behind them to say are they more like an f12 or more like a 488 In terms of drive.

Getting back to your question when is enough? Manufacturers have to sell new cars and they need to attract buyers. How do they communicate improvements? Hp is an easy metric to advertise so I think the hp game will continue to go. My hope is that weight does not balloon out of control as it has on some of these cars. New lambo aventador has I think 1100hp? But it’s close to 4000 pounds. Personally I have no interest in that.

To end all my rambling high hp and light weight is what I personally look for. My 765 could be the most perfect car I’ve owned to satisfy those requirements.

ferrari doesn't have an artura competitor *(a Dino would be perfect). artura is a turbo s competitor. price and performance wise. i disagree with another poster. the 750S will be a daily driver version of the 765LT. price and performance at near 296 level.

only that like the artura nobody will buy it...a 'face lift' 720 won't fly..we have moved into a new era...if that's their only ace up the sleeve then I would say they are done

I classify the 296 as a highly competent, very fast daily driver. It is not in the league of a STO or 765 in terms of being immersive, engaging and engendering a heightened level of excitement.

Yet you choose a 812 over a 275 in another thread? Are you sharing this account with your brother? Maybe that’s why I see two disparate opinions from you all the time.

I don't know the 296 is one of the funnest cars I have ever driven to include tracking/racing Porsches (cup car). The cup car is a load of fun BUT when you are racing...you are extremely focused on well...the act of racing itself...the 296 was, lets hit the open road and play.

I think everyone here accepts that in overall 296 is better. But its superiority will be more sensible on track. For someone who is not tracking his cars Artura might be as fun as 296 with a lot less money which doesn't mean that Artura wouldn't be fun at all on track...

This is correct. There is a waiting list 20 deep at my dealer for the 750.

This is not their only ace up their sleeve and they are far from done. They make some engaging and compelling cars that have caused their competitors to up their performance metrics.

The artura as others have stated is not a 296 competitor. Its far from that. Its a Turbo S alternative for those looking for one. I spent 1/2 a day driving it and enjoyed the car immensely.

I could see that. Honestly at the end of the day...what do you like and prefer (in the space we are talking about...these are first world problems)? The Artura IMO is a great car. I do think the 296 is more potent...but there are things I like about it. The truth is that I hope all these auto manufacturers put out great cars and give us the consumers hard choices wrt buying a car like this.

says who? The McL dealer? There is a perception that if a car is not sold out at launch, it's a failure...so just means that everybody pitches to that level...next thing you know the BMW 320i will be sold out over the entire production run at launch..but somehow there will be 'a very special opportunity just for you to get potentially an allocation'

well they had to sell pretty much everything they owned apart from the production line and still raise money...the Artura is a failure....if they would indeed push the boundaries (which yes they used to do)...they wouldn't only do a facelift and marginal power upgrade to a car that is 6 years old...they would launch a competitor to the SF90 and new AV

So by that definition the F8 was a failure and Ferrari is done? Because Ferrari took a 10 year old platform, did a facelift with a marginal power upgrade.

The CEO of McLaren said so, and my dealer said they have more than enough deposits to outsell the entire production run. Tampa and Miami said forget it, they have over a dozen on the standby waitlist. Everybody that missed out on the 765 is trying to get it.
