Update on my 512M conversion: after four coats of white I peeled off the masking tape and for a first try I'd call it a success. There was only minor paint bleeding on a few difficult spots (in front of the air outlet in the nose, but otherwise the Tamiya masking tape for curves works excellent.
I was able to correct the bleeds with nail polish remover.
Now I need to do the finishing touches. Mainly the air intake, which I masked off and will paint with a fine brush. Then applying the blue stripe and finally the decals.

It is finished! As I feared the quality of the decal set is not that good. First of all I had to cut out the decals myself. For decals with straight edges this is not that bad, but some of them had a narrow white border, which you don't see when they're still on the decal sheet. The same goes for the white decals. The white is not opaque enough. This is apparent on the 'Scuderia Filipinetti' script as well as the Trico decal. Unfortunately I could not correct those. I was able to do something about it for the Shell decals on the rear winglets. I first applied a piece of white vinyl decal cut to size.

So it's not a perfect transformation, but overall I'm very happy with it. Let's see if CMR decides to bring out this livery after all!

p.s. I know it's not faithful to the livery as raced at Le Mans, but I didn't like the Camel decals anyway and some of the decal sheet wouldn't fit properly. So I tried to come ad close to the one I saw myself at Val de Vienne in 2019.

    Peter, nice job, looks great!
I have used several times decals from the same company for a few BBR 250 GTO's.
I had the same problem with the white colour, so I bought two of the same decals and put them right on top of each other.
I know, it's a little more expensive, but it looks better.

I've thought about that too, but a bit expensive indeed for basically three decals. Another option might be self adhesive letters like below. I have these, but a bit too large.

Does anyone know how these tools for holding a model while spray painting are called? And are they usable for various scales? I will be mainly painting 1:32 and 1:18 scale models.

I'm looking for the correct Tamiya TS spray paint that comes closest to the older Ferrari red of the fifties. I'm leaning towards TS-85. Is that a decent choice? Some model shops call it mica red, sometimes even (brilliant) Ferrari mica red. I already have the TS-8 paint, which is called Italian red. But that seems too modern to me. Another option might be TS-18, metallic red. Yet another option might be TS-39, mica gloss red. I'm confused!

I'd say TS-8 is your best match from Tamiya. It's basically Rosa Corsa. The vintage Ferrari China Red was slightly darker.

Zero Paints might be a good option.

Over the years I've done many wheel swaps. It sounds simple, but usually there's more to it than meets the eye. I thought it would be fun to show my latest wheel swap on a 1:18 scale 250 GT Lusso by KK-Scale.

Wheel swaps on resin models are usually quite easy, as most of the time the wheels are attached to simple axles and the wheels often don't turn. However, KK-Scale models are die-cast with turning and steering wheels. There's suspension detail as well.

It is quite rare that the wheel of your choice will fit without modifications. For this swap my wheel of choice is the wire wheel by BBR. BBR makes four different wire wheel sets:

For the Lusso I chose the P02 set.

Comparing the wire wheels of BBR (right) and the original KK-Scale's (left):

As you can see the backs of the wheels are very different so the BBR wheels won't attach to the suspension easily. By the way, these KK-Scale wheels come off very easily. You can just pull them off. This is not always the case! Sometime you have to damage the original wheels to get them off.

On the suspension parts, the wheel hubs are integrated with the disk brakes. At the rear the stick out too much, so I had to cut the whole hubs off and drill a hole for my own axles. They're made out off threaded rod (3mm) with a pair of small nuts.

At the front I had to drill a hole as well for my own axles. The axles are a perfect fit for the BBR wheels.

I test fitted the wheels with the body back on and the car was sitting a bit too low on it's wheels. Usually I can fix this with adding small shims to the suspension. This time it was even easier. The suspension parts have small springs and are fixed with small screws. Instead of tightening the screws, I gave them a bit of slack. The springs are thus less compressed and this way I could adjust the ride hight!

And I'm very happy with the end result!

By the way, the BBR wire wheels come with center knock-offs as well as valve stems. These stems are tiny and a pain to install. Usually one goes missing...

I do have a problem with older cars that have drum brakes. Disk brakes are easy to replicate and there are even many after market disks available. Sofar I haven't found drum brakes in 1/18th scale. Does anyone know a company or vendor where I can get drum brakes?

KK Scale does make very accurate bodies. Comparing their KK Scale 1/12th 246 Dino to the Top Marques 1/12th 246 Dino shows by how much. KK nailed it and Top Marques screwed up the windshield and roofline from the front. It's too bad because everything else on the Top Marques model is of higher quality.

This is my latest - 1/8th scale Agora Porsche 917 k - the Steve McQueen car- Michael Delaney… it’s very nice and well detailed I added quite a bit in terms of wiring and plumbing ... There is some more super detailing I'm going to do but its finally together.... still need to cover up exposed screws, and do some interior work as well as drill out fuel cap holes etc... but for now I love it.

The only thing which is not correct are the exhausts at the back, they belong to the side.
