Took my 355 F1 out this morning after properly warming it up. After a bit of driving began to have intermittent issues downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. I’d pull the left paddle and it sounded like it *tried* to downshift, and basically couldn’t engage the gear. No weird sound or grinding, just didn’t want to find the gear.

When coming to a stop, it selected neutral and then wouldn’t select ANY gear. Did an F1 reboot process and it reset the system so I could return home, but still intermittently couldn’t find 2nd in any rev range. Sometimes it would blip down just fine, other times nada.

Upshifts are totally fine through all gears 1-6. Down shifts are fine 6 to 5, 5 to 4, 4 to 3. 3 to 2 is intermittently problematic. 2 to 1 is fine.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I shouldn't do this because I want to buy your car, but, how many times does the transmission light blink when you turn the ignition key on after it has been sitting for a few hours or overnight?

Haha. I assume you mean the red one all the way to the left? I didn’t know to look for that one but I caught out of the corner of my eye that it blinked multiple times, but I didn’t count how many just now. 4? 5?

How many times is it supposed to blink? Trying it again it came on and turned off.

How long was it since you last turned on the ignition? (prior to this)

Watson probably wants to know how good your pump is and if your accumulator is holding pressure.

Ah. Yes I drove it this morning and it sat for probably 6 hours before I turned the key to the on position, but did not start it.

Yes, the transmission light. 4 times would be ideal.

Yep. I’ll go try again after dinner but like I said I think I saw it blink 4-5 times. That means the pump / accumulator is good?

what else might make it sassy like that trying to find 2nd from 3rd?

Well, I suppose gearbox internal issues, like synchros. How many miles/kms on the clock?

But you also said no gear selectable after coming to a stop.

How are your fluid levels? Anything leaking on your garage floor?

I've been trying to figure out which solenoids are activated/deactivated with the change from 3rd to 2nd.

It looks like EV1 is deenergised and EV2 energised (but the same process is required for other gears).

(Experts) Does the TCU deenergise all solenoids during gearchanges and reenergised all the applicable solenoids? Or does it just change the non-common ones when changing from one gear to another?

Thanks for doing this homework, I'd be remiss if I said I knew what I was looking at.

I did take it out for a short drive last night to fill up the tank in advance of potentially needing to drive it to Palm Beach, and guess what?

Downshifts to 2nd worked fine. It is almost like there is some computer that is “learning” not to downshift it into 2nd over a longer period of driving. It really is weird.

When it doesn’t want to select 2nd, if I go to neutral and then select a gear again, it goes into 3rd and tries to stall out if I am not rolling enough for 3rd to catch.

Before owning this, I always called F1 355s “automatics” but this is a manual transmission car in every sense of the word. It’s very cool. Very exciting.

Any new thoughts what this might be?

69700 miles. I need to check fluid levels, but just had a 30k service in late October. No leaks.

I’m not a technical car guy. Can someone replace synchros? What’s the bill for something like that?

The whole gearbox has to be removed and disassembled.
The final bill for an overhaul of my gearbox was about U$22,000, but half the gearbox was replaced after some lumpy bits were found in oil

Good luck finding the parts :D

Step 1. Find good Ferrari mechanic with the proper tools.

Respectfully, this doesn’t make sense to me because it operates perfectly on short runs. No issues.

So, great news. Seems like it was a combination of operator error and an mis-configuration. I used my HyperTough HT300 to clear my codes, drove it for an hour and took it through all the rev ranges and 2nd worked just fine.

Here’s the thing, I can only find 2nd in sub 3000 rev range. Most reliably 2000-2500. But as long as I’m in that rev range it finds it every time.

It’s almost as if my F1 ECU thinks I am trying to downshift while redlining and it retards the shift to “protect” me from overtaxing the engine. Is this something the dealer can just reconfigure?
