Saw that, a lot of heroes are passing, it seems.

I remember him most from the 600mph car, but I'm a younger guy.

    Thanks for the link!

I have a die-cast model of his first Spirit of America, the one that broke the 500-mph barrier and then wound up in a salt pond. I loved that car; it looked like a wingless jet fighter!

When is this? In August? I looked and noted something about endurance event in May? I can google it but is there a good link or guide do accomodations etc? Lux motor home rental? Seems I recall something about accommodations being sparse.

Another event is Reno, I think this is the last year for the air races.

That is true, at least at Reno. They claim they are looking for a new site, but there is some doubt that will ever happen.

After crash of Galloping Ghost entries of unlimited went down and so did spectators. Not to mention insurance issues. Then the jet crash not to mention the speeds seen and the expense of running those birds.

Sorry but due to modern day realities may be the end of an era.

Well he did finish this one and ran it several times. Many in aerospace felt it could top 1000 mph but a few trips to Black Rock Lake with some bad luck kept him from breaking the sound barrier. The British car which most felt was an inferior design broke the sound barrier and once that happened all the sponsorship money went away. Had it not been so many were focused on Mach 1 instead of the record he may have had financing to own the record as he had so many times before.

I actually raced with his son in the Russell Series back in the day. Excellent driver, and I believe he held the lap record @ Willow in the FF class for some time. Seen here attending the cars @ OMS.
