I am in the process of replacing the bottle and accumulator, and having quite a challenge with getting the accumulator loose. Tried 27mm crows foot and wrench, both too bulky to get a good grip, considering grinding down to fit. Also tried 2mm thick tappet wrench, it fits nicely but accumulator won’t budge and because wrench is so thin, it starts to almost cut into the nut because of the torque so i stopped there. Rubber strap filter wrench does nothing.

So, I’m now thinking i need to remove the power unit or at least the big black metal bracket it’s attached to.

Curious of those who know, is it best to go at this from the top, or did you remove rear inner fender liner to loosen those bolts on the black mounting plate?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Question ..did you de-pressurize system

Going thru fender lining will def give you more leverage but try using this first from on top with breaker bar

Strap is the ticket… I had a struggle w mine but it finally gave way. The replacement had an adapter with more height so easy to get a wrench on it and tighten.

Remove the f1 pump relay or fuse and be sure no pressure in system or it will never come out

You have to depressurize the system. I tried this and and couldn't get it off no matter what i tried, too much pressure. Let it sit overnight and retry

Thanks all for the quick responses, very much appreciate them. To the questions on de-pressurize ... I hit the kill switch and it's been sitting without power for 2 weeks. I also have the bottle off, with exposed hoses. I think that should do it BUT I didnt do anything special to the accumulator to relieve pressure, I assume it's depressurized but can someone confirm??

To the strap wrenches ... yes, tried that, nothing. Not a budge.

Yes, would certainly appreciate any help ... feel free to DM and we can take it offline. Or I can provide email / phone etc.

Loosen the 8mm bleeder valve on front side of housing, let sit for a few hours. Grab it with an oil filter wrench from the top. I found there was no advantage to removing the wheel liner unless you end up making a mess and need to clean it up.

Personally I found this style to be the most useful.

I removed some pieces around the area and used a crow-foot with a long handle ratchet. It gave way. I realize every car is different.

2 weeks, 4 wrenches, 3 bloody knuckles and a woven tapestry of 4-letter words later … success!

Rubber strap wrench with better leverage got it loose. I’d call out to others doing this, when mine came loose, it did so immediately. It wasn’t a slow releasing, it popped (hence the loss of skin there on my hand). Normally wear gloves but was having a hard time with the extra bulk so went barehanded and paid the price. But it’s off!!!

Will start the reassembly process today and Dominick (flash32) has been super helpful.

also I can confirm the Alfa part 71751195 is an exact fit. I bought from these guys and it was at my door (England to US) in 4 days Magneti Marelli SELESPEED ACCUMULATOR https://www.alfaworkshop.co.uk/parts/GT_Actuator.shtml

Got everything back together and all is working great. Still need to do a few timing tests to monitor pump on/off to see how it’s holding, but did a few Test drives and performed without any issues. Original issue was dumping to neutral on every drive, worse when warm but did it cold also, and up and downshifts. So far so good!!

Dominick was a huge help with this, love having such a knowledgeable AND willing to help community here!

    Very interesting!

May I ask, what could go wrong with an accumulator? How did you get the idea of replacing it?

I am asking because I am currently facing an intermittent shifting to Neutral when warm, same as you mentioned.

Personally I was thinking that I have an issue with potentio or engagement selection sensor and an accumulator would not cross my mind (yet).

You should start with doing timings of how much /many times the pump goes on, duration of on times and off times with key in on position and then repeat again with engine on

Also see how many shifts you get with just key on.. 1 to n to r to 1 etc and then repeat with engine on (stationary)

Also check for codes with a reader that can read your car .. not sure what model /year you have
