It's every drivers dream to win the WC. If the principles of the sport kept the facts hidden, and denied a man the pinnacle of his life's vocation, I certainly think there is a case to answer. The race should have been excluded from the championship, and Massa would have therefore been crowned WC. No matter the disruption and fallout, how can one man be forever denied his rightful life's ambition due to deceit and malfeasance ? I say let the chips fall where they may. Perhaps F1 will learn an important lesson and it will keep the sport more ethical going forward. Btw, Briatore should hang his head in shame forever. What an awful person. He helped destroy Piquet's career (although I also blame Piquet for not recognising he had a duty to choose integrity).

I sincerely hope the result of all this will be:

    - FIA rules that are clear and unambiguous to all
    - the notion that cheaters will be caught and punished no matter how long it takes

What credibility ? They all cheated, Ecclestone knew it. Massa should have been WC as the race result should have been excluded. What a travesty, on every level.

A further point. Had Massa been crowned (rightfully imho) WC, he would have realised so much more financially, both from the team, and sponsors. He has suffered a terrible travesty and injustice. Imagine this happening to someone you personally cared about and helped through all the levels of the sport, only to have this happen. Make it about the man. Damn the "interest's" of F1. The more I think about this, the more offended I become. Briatore truly disgusts me

On top of that, Briatore regularly lectures people on how F1 should be in the future ..
It would be totally unfair to change the 2008 WDC results.
Lewis has nothing to do with this mess.
But Massa would be right to ask for a huge financial compensation.

There is no certainty that Massa would have been champion; see posts #197 and #201.

Also, calls for the race to be cancelled, and the result erased are not based on FIA rules.

When one team is found guilty of breaking technical or sporting rules, only THAT team is excluded: the race is NOT cancelled.

    Based on what ?
It's a huge question mark if Massa would have become WDC had the Crashgate been discovered at the time.
Let's not forget that Massa eliminated himself from that race !

    Indeed,
This fake incident created directly the disastrous pit stop from Ferrari.
You will said this is only Ferrari’s responsibility but I would disagree on this one.
Nothing proves they would have failed again later in the race if the pit stop was in a normal timing..
So there is a clear causal effect with this episode to my opinion.

Massa's attorney could also claim for Consequential Financial Losses. It's pretty straightforward to arrive at a ballpark figure ££

The pitstop turned to be disastrous for Ferrari because of a technical failure which isn't related to the yellow flag in any way.

Massa answered to a electric signal telling him to go, which wrongly anticipated the release of the fuel hose.

That electric glitch would have occured at any moment, and the consequences been the same, crashgate or not !

There was no glitch....it was a human error, everyone saw the mechanic who pressed the button to soon crying and Massa conforting him....it happened because it was a double stack situation under a lot more stress, anyway, what happened in the pitstop is totally irrelevent for the discussion.

Indeed, cancelling a race would be completely unusual - and then all drivers having scored points in that race without being guilty of anything could also file legal action for being unfairly deprived of these points...

If he gets the WDC his life expectancy will go up by at least 10 years.
    And Hamster's down by 10.

Hmm, was the Ferrari light system not automated? or was they talking bulls when they said they was going back to the lolipop system? if an automated system fails, How is that HUMAN error? was it not the same error he also had at a previous race? eg Valencia? Ferrari said it WAS. Sorry for bursting your bubble.

The cheating team didn't affect their performance only. They drastically changed the outcome of the race. The FIA covered it up.

If Massa doesn't pursue this to the bitter end he's a loser.

Yes, it is highly relevant. When a team botches a pit stop, it cannot accuse another team for that mistake.
Ferrari thought to improve their pit stops by replacing the signal from the lollipop man by an electric light, and the system failed.
They cannot, 15 years later, blame Renault for that cock-up ! They did it to themselves.
Even if, a big IF, the crashgate plot had been discovered immediatly, Massa wouldn't have been reinstated, and only Alonso and Renault would have been disqualified.
The fact that Hamilton became WDC that year gives a belly-ache to some of you, but the explanations don't add up!

Any and all events could be considered drastic changes to an event. A collision that was penalized was deemed illegal by the rules, had all those incidents not happened the outcome could be drastically different, and it affects more than just the guilty party involved. Don't get me wrong, I understand the extent of which Renault manipulated a race, but it's not accurate to suggest it was the only incident to change the outcome of a race. As a matter of fact, most incidents change the outcome of a race in some fashion.

What sucks for Massa is Ferrari's own mistake didn't put him in a position to score points that race. Safety cars come out all the time, and they often help and hurt different team. This scenario is no different to Singapore, with the exception of Alonso who it was designed to help. Had Ferrari not screwed up, they still score enough points to win the WDC. The SC wasn't the fault of 9 other teams, and Ferrari's screw up wasn't the fault of any other team either. You can't punish everyone for one team's actions. Again, I've said it over and over, there still has been no evidence of a rule that even supports it.

Imagine winning the lottery. Jackpot was $20 million. 2 tickets won, 1 of which was yours, so you get $10 million. Great day for you. Turns out, one store rigged their machine and they were the other winner. So rather than taking away that one winning ticket, they take them all. So your $10 million is gone, the 5 or 6 people that won a couple hundred grand lose their money, and the hundreds or thousands of other people lose their winnings as well. Does that sound fair? I can guarantee with 100% certainty if you were the one with the other $10 million ticket, you would be singing a different tune right now.

Despite William liking you, you're incorrect. The system differs from the traditional lolipop because it's a lights sistem, however, the green light to say go it's operated by a mechanic, that has to press a button in order to activate the light.
For you to burst my bubble in terms of f.1 knowledge you would have to spend many, many years reading, watching and learning, and maybe, long after i'm dead you would would arrive somewhere....but i doubt it...
