Today i bought a 1979 ferrari 308 factory tuned, the buyer of the car was gonna race with the car in 1979 in something called group4, so the car was factory made for this, with sport suspension 16inc wheel,4 race exhaust, the engine was tuned to 300hp, the car is in mint condition and only have 42,000km on it, im so happy with this buy, the engine doesn't sound like a normal 308, very mean sound and revs 8300rpm..=)
anyone have some info on this group 4 factory tune?

    Doger.

I haven't got the car home yet, but as soon as it gets home, VIN and photon will arrive, the man ho ordered the car in 1979 needed to wait 8 month more then was stated, so he missed the racing season, the year after he didn't do any racing for some reason, so the car was sitting in a garage and he sold it in 1982, and the new owner had the car to 2022, 40 years.

    Looks awfully standard to me

My recollection of Grp 4 is way more extreme

There's a.long thread about alleged high power upgrades from the factory which seem inconclusive

I thought group 4 wasn't idealized until after 82 or so

That was the birth idea for the 288

this is probably the engine upgrade:

Sprint pack» including P6 cams, 42 DCNF Weber carburetors, Borgo HC pistons, matt black cam cover, four exhaust pipes, stamped Ferrari. - 16" Speedline wheels fitted with Pirelli P7.

i have never see or heard a 308 to have this upgrade?, it seams like it is rare, anyone have this upgrade?, the seller told me that he has paiper from factory claiming 300hp, the value of the car should climbe?

Perhaps it is me, or the angle of the pictures, but the body indent line doesn't seem to be black? If it is not black, then the paint is not original...

i can assure you it is original paint, same owner for 40 years, the black is there, but the angle hide it, i have photos, but the are corrupted, cant open them, frustrating.

    That
That's not a VIN code - VINs have 17 characters. I don't know when Ferrari started using VINs but apparently it was after your year. VINs are easy to check - that number, not so much but there must be a data base somewhere...

    F106AB is the engine type as I recall & 27193 s/n

Lots of 79 cars specified the 16 in P7 option and the 4 pipe exhaust I think was at least a dealer if not factory option

i have made some digging, and this is the result, but of course not 100% sure, i have contacted ferrari in italy to have the correct numbers, but until then, 1978 it was only 4 cars and 1979 6 cars that took full "Sprint pack" including P6 cams, 42 DCNF Weber carburetors, Borgo HC pistons, matt black cam cover, four exhaust pipes, stamped Ferrari. - 16" Speedline wheels fitted with Pirelli P7.
so they are rare indeed, they sell one here, 243,000US!!, it is starting to be crazy prices!

I believe most of the true Group 4 cars went through Michelotto for modifications - these are very valuable now. You should ask him if the car went there. They are like a "AMG" to Mercedes before acquisition and stuck the label on everything. They still exist. They really only do race cars, like the gt3 cars. If it is, good luck with the purchase because you are buying gold. If even the "sprint pack" that might add some value. Dig into this. If he is saying factory, try to understand more.... Is there any documentation? When you get take photos and share here. This is THE BEST GROUP ON FCHAT. We will want to know more.

Congrats on your finding what sounds like a good one! re P6 and Borgo setup: Myself and others who have extensive experience setting these up, both in period and now, all testify to them being absolute pigs until 4000rpm or so. Good for a 'real' 265 or so bhp. Sounds about right as the one I set up on a dyno made 225bhp at the rear wheels (dynojet). None were factory installed, all were dealer add-ons.

There was an engine Ferrari built for Doc Bailey's GT4 (founder of Rutlands before it was Rutlands Ferrari parts) as such was the relationship Bailey had with Ferrari they built him a 'speciale' engine and shipped it in a crate. Word is it was a rocket (relatively) and completely streetable. My guess on that motor is Ferrari used the Daytona/Dino cam grind, which is a grind not as radical as P6 yet more radical than the Euro spec 308 cams, and in conjunction with higher compression Borgo pistons. Sadly no one knows where that motor is now! One of Ted Rutlands ghost stories

The seller send me some photos of document, he didn't have the document where it says what is in the engine, but i paper on italian that says that it is speciale camshaft and speciale pistons, how often you need to adjust valves because of this and to use champion 60NY plugs and so on, i will try to get information on what my chassis number say, ferrari probably have this information., 11 digit VIN means it was build in Maranello plant, that i now now, small progress..:)

The VIN as we know it now began after 1980.

That would be so interesting as I do not recall seeing any road test of this variant before so it would really progress the other thread especially
