This one is the first prototype, 10287. It will be for sale by sealed auction at RM Sotheby’s later this month.
    The second prototype is 11001.

If the car you had at your shop had a 275 engine it was 11001, because 12087 has a unique 330 engine with 3 valves per cylinder.
Another way to distinguish the cars is that 12087 has 6 taillights (much like the 365 P Tre Posti) and 11001 has 4 (ressemblons more to the production Daytona).

It’s possible as I just woke up at 2am for a business trip when I wrote the message, but if you look at the stories on RM’s Instagram it looks like it’s the first one, 10287, with the 6 taillights

#10287. 2 camshafts or 4 for the tipo 243 engine?

How many overhead camshafts does this engine have, 2 or 4?

I have asked this question a number of times but nobody has answered. Both the chassis stamp and engine bay ID plate say 365 GTB, not 365 GTB/4. If this was a 4 cam engine, wouldn't these say 365 GTB/4? The engine also has a 251 stamp, which is the 365 GTB/4 Daytona production engine tipo, not 243, which this engine is said to be. I see the Classiche book states the car as 365 GTB/4 prototype but does that actually mean it has a 4 cam engine or just that it is the 365 GTB/4 prototype? Looking at the engine it looks like (not saying it is) a SOHC engine, not DOHC. The auction description does not state how many camshafts it has and nor have I seen any article that actually states the number of camshafts.

The auction description is also wrong in stating that the car has 3 valves per cylinder instead of the usual 4 valves per cylinder. All other 275 and 365 engines had 2 valves per cylinder, not 4.

In earlier days 10287 (not 12087 as you typoed twice–just to be precise, not to blame anyone) also seems to have only four taillights instaed of the mentioned six...

To me, that looks like a 4-cam engine; seems hard to fit two cams under that one cover that can be seen, and it would make sense that the cover would be larger if there were 2 intake valves.

Boy, there sure a lot of interesting details on that car...

Ugh... I need to proofread better...

Meant to say "seems hard to fit intake and exhaust under that one cover"...

10287 started life with six taillights, was later incorrectly "restored" with four and Classiche then initially refused certification bc of that. So the Dutch owner, Mr. G. v.B., had to find the correct six taillights.
I was involved in that entire process.

The one in my shop was definitely a four cam.
It was parked right next to a 275GTB/4.

Sorry about that! I’m to blame.
    I indeed meant 10287! Twice… :)
Waking up at 2 to drive for 9h is not good for my accuracy !

My apologies but I don't understand your replies. You are saying it looks like a 4 cam engine, yet hard to fit 2 cams under one cover.

There is only one cover either side. See pic below.

The twin-overhead-cam design naturally creates a hemispherical combustion chamber which places the sparkplug between the intake and exhaust valves. Here, being a single-cam layout, the plugs are offset to the exhaust side. Interestingly, this is a twin-spark motor.

    Hi Steven,

Yeah, my posts here were just a mess wording-wise. Apologies for that.

Here is what I was trying to say. To me, that pictured cam-cover looked too small to cover all the stuff you would need to actuate both intake and exhaust valves, so it looked to me like there must be another cam and cam-cover lower down that was just not in the pictures that I could find on the RM site; hence "it looks like a 4-cam".

The "larger because of 2-intakes" comment was based on the notion that they were using some sort of follower/rocker arrangement. Not that I can think of a good reason for them doing that, it is just that this would be the only explanation for the larger cover.

Of course, all the above would seem to be just plain wrong, given the additional picture that you sent. Sure seems like somehow they managed to squeeze both intake and exhaust under that one small cover. Really wild...

Apologies again for the goofed-up posts,
    Alex

did they all come with spats(rear wheel covers)?
the spats to me is what distinguishes it as an aero design.

The Prototype Daytona mentioned in this thread uses a Tipo 243 "Heron" head engine (like the V-12 Jaguar). It has the combustion chambers in the tops of the pistons and the cylinder head surface is completely flat. It is a DOHC motor. Since the valves stand vertically over the cylinders, the distance between them is very small and BOTH camshafts fit under the narrow covers. It has two intake and one exhaust valves per cylinder. In this era, some engineers thought the "Heron" head design produced fewer emissions and this was Ferrari's attempt to investigate this approach. It did not work out.
