Not sure about the current rule set, but at Indy it was always the car that qualified. Not sure if they can use a backup. That is why they always used to tip-toe around after qualifying.

    Graham gets Stefan's seat

will start 33rd in D&R's backup chassis, with a Chevy motor.

I agree with Steven’s comment. I always thought at Indy if you trashed your car after qualifying it, it had to be repaired or it was out. I would have thought Rahal would then move up in his own car, as the 34th. fastest, not in a car that hadn’t been qualified.

last year Herta had to replace the chassis after that big carb day crash and started where he qualified.

So apparently the old “the cars, not the drivers, qualify” rule no longer applies. I guess it goes along with being what amounts to a spec series.

    apparently so.

I just did a quick scan of the IndyCar rule book and indeed, you can substitute a backup car for a primary (qualified) car without losing starting position. I don't know how long that's been the case.

I didn't see where a driver change required going to the back of the grid, but it makes sense.

Vintage Motorsport has devoted much of their April/May issue to the 500, with articles on Parnelli Jones (the winner 60 years ago), Gordon Johncock (the winner 50 years ago), the Unser Racing Museum in Albuquerque, vintage Indycar racing and a tribute to drivers that finished 2nd in the 500 but never won. For other than Indy there is an article on the last Cosworth F1 victories in 1983 and on Peter Gregg.

(I've been to the Unser museum and if you're ever in the area it is worth a visit.)

I was watching the NHRA race on Sunday after Indy qualifying and thought, Graham's sister-in-law went 100 MPH faster than him.

Don't forget, his wife used to do that, and of course his father-in-law is still doing it at age 74! May the Force be with them!

    How do they do it??

K.Legge has a wheel nut come off and yellow flag is out because she stopped immediately. Broadcast team talks about how that happened to graham rahal last year. There is NEAR IMMEDIATE footage of it. How does that work?

right, but a wheel nut falling off is pretty random...maybe it was part of the rahal tribulations, and just dumb luck they had it....
