Now that it's late May, it should be no surprise that the first College Football preview magazine has his the stands, and it is my favorite, from Athlon, a publication I've been getting since 1972 (when I was in college myself!).

To start with, here is their projected Top 10:
    1. Georgia
    2. Michigan
    3. Alabama
    4. USC
    5. Ohio State
    6. LSU
    7. Florida State
    8. Penn State
    9. Washington
    10. Utah

Not surprising to see three SEC teams up there, but also three Big 10 teams and three Pac 12 teams!

I will list Athlon's rankings for the "Power 5" conferences, starting with my favorite, the SEC:
    1. Georgia
    3. Alabama
    6. LSU
    15. Tennessee
    20. Texas A&M
    21. Ole Miss
    27. Kentucky
    29. Arkansas
    31. South Carolina
    33. Mississippi State
    39. Auburn
    49. Florida
    50. Missouri
    69. Vanderbilt

I'm rather disappointed to see the Gators ranked that low, but I'd rather seem them that way than ranked too high. Athlon has them with the same record as the last two years, but I think that Billy Napier has some tricks up his sleeve and the Gators may make several teams they play a bit upset! One can only hope.

As an Atlanta resident, I have to do the ACC next:
    7. Florida State
    12. Clemson
    25. North Carolina
    30. Miami
    35. Duke
    36. Pittsburgh
    40. Louisville
    46. N.C. State
    48. Wake Forest
    56. Syracuse
    67. Georgia Tech
    78. Virginia Tech
    80. Boston College
    93. Virginia

And, since Notre Dame almost seems like a de facto ACC team, playing half their schedule against the conference, they were ranked 14th. Incidentally, there are a total of 133 FBS teams this year, with UMass bringing up the rear.

Next up, here's the Big 10:
    2. Michigan
    5. Ohio State
    8. Penn State
    17. Wisconsin
    26. Iowa
    34. Minnesota
    41. Maryland
    47. Illinois
    52. Michigan State
    55. Nebraska
    57. Purdue
    79. Rutgers
    81. Indiana
    84. Northwestern

Now, the Big 12, soon to be apparently reduced in size:
    11. Texas
    16. Oklahoma
    18. Kansas State
    23. TCU
    28. Texas Tech
    43. Kansas
    44. Baylor
    45. Oklahoma State
    53. UCF
    54. Iowa State
    58. BYU
    60. Houston
    61. Cincinnati
    64. West Virginia

Finally, for now, the Pac 12:
    4. USC
    9. Washington
    10. Utah
    13. Oregon
    19. Oregon State
    24. UCLA
    59. Washington State
    63. Arizona
    65. California
    75. Colorado
    76. Arizona State
    96. Stanford

The gap between the top six and the bottom six is quite breathtaking. Obviously, Athlon thinks it will take "Coach Prime" more than one year to turn Colorado around, and they may be right.

The only other Top 25 team that is not accounted for in the above lists is Tulane at #22. If anyone wants to know where a team not listed above is ranked, reply on this thread and I'll give you the good or bad news.

I think Texas and Oklahoma are making the same mistake Nebraska did 11 years ago...

As far as these top-10's, top-20's, ho-hum, same ol same ol, nothing to see here, move along folks....
I'll take interest when the big bowl games pop up, just like the NBA - I could not care less until the finals.

Nebraska will be interesting this season, I wish the QB would have stuck around, I think
they would have been a bit higher than 55th, maybe 35th or 40th.

I'm not on the Billy bandwagon at all. He can't coach. He's a recruiter but pretty much squandered the season last year in several ways. His offensive scheme sucks and the QB he picked up in the portal is dreadful. I know Stricklin is giving him a long leash but I don't think he lasts long term here. At least he got rid of Patrick Toney who took Grantham's defense and made it worse. Didn't think that was possible, but it was.

My dad was chief of navel intelligence in San Juan during the Bay of Pigs. They had a war room right out of Dr. Strangelove.
