You know, my detail guy said that, but when I went to my trusted body shop he said it was absolutely rust. Maybe I should just have him do the work and when he sands it down he can see it's not rust, maybe.

Did you do the mirror stems as well? I have the same issue there, actually much worse.

He's saying he will only do it no warranty, that the rust will start happening again immediately.

I do have bubbling on my mirror stems but not bad enough to get it done yet.

Are you sure you should be trusting this paint guy????!!!! LOL There's no reason why if rubbed down to bare metal and a proper primer applied why it shouldn't last. It is most definitely NOT rust - rust is brown whereas aluminum corrosion is like a white powder.

Apart from the magnet test, you could always spray the "rust" with some of the purple deionizer used for cleaning wheels/fallout. Rust will dissolve whereas this white powder won't.

To some people any metal corrosion is rust. No need to split hairs.

It's not about splitting hairs - if you look at post #4 the bodyshop guy was adamant it was rust and in post #6 the same guy says he will only paint it without warranty - bad sign in my opinion. He really should know his stuff better than that - the detail guy knew what it was.

I'm just an amateur but because I prepped the surface properly its lasted over 10 years with no signs of coming back so there's no reason why a decent bodyshop cant do the same.

It's oxidation caused by moisture contamination of the bare aluminium before painting, something as simple as a finger print can slowly set it off.

Mclaren and Aston Martin had huge problems with the same happening on their aluminium body panels.

Best bet is to dry bead blast to bare, spirit panel wipe and quickly etch prime then a sealer coat on top, after that normal auto paint will stick to it like the proverbial.

There's 2 captive alan bolts/screws on the inside of the door just above the door lock screws. It was quite a while ago when I did mine and I had my whole door apart when doing so so I cant quite remeber whether you would be able to wriggle it out or not - my gut feeling is you'd be better off taking the inner panels off the door to give proper access.

My LHS one still needs doing so if there is enough interest I don't mind doing it and taking a few photos.

Thanks, I had mine unbolted, the door lining off but could not wriggle it out. Felt like something else was restricting it. I also see the rubber seal in the unit is very costly to replace.

Those people are wrong. Hairs need to be split. It's not all that hard to speak accurately.

Just thought I would chime in. Rust usually refers to metal/steel and corrosion refers to abc, aluminum, bronze, copper. Having said that the piece can be stripped and I would find fund a shop and have it powder coated. I belive in fact that it was from the factory.

I would also blast and power coat that bit assuming the surface finish is not too damaged, it could be however. Best of luck!
