No, the o-rings provide the sealing, but I used some of the a/c oil to lubricate the o-rings (don't over tighten).

As Carl pointed out to me, the car has really good bones and is very original so it won’t be hard to sort the deferred maintenance stuff and yes, it will be a really good car when I’m done. I’m actually enjoying it, it’s nice to drive and have no intention to sell at the moment.
