Oil cooler removal and restoration

Take the hoses out with it. All it is is a core with fittings attached. Buy a new one.

 

Have a look at the diagram on the Eurospares web site , from what i can see it might be easier to remove both ends of the pipes as compression one end and banjo fittings other end. Assuming you have room. Superperformance list new rads if u get stuck.

 

There are no compression fittings on the oil hoses.

 

This is the best way ! you risk to break the fittings on the oil cooler itself.

 

Bit hard to see on the drawing, is it a coned end on the radiator end ?

Tony - that oil cooler is from a 1985 mondial (euro) - I'm not sure what is "uprated" about the SP version in that picture but they also sell the one below though it looks like it's special order and and exchange - maybe call some other vendors to see who has what and at what price or have your original repaired

Tony - since SP lists that uprated cooler in the section for Mondial QV, I would suspect that it should fit. As for British/Euro vs. US, the threads on the oil cooler should be the same. But, given the cost and the fact that you probably want to get your car back on the road, you may want to lob a call into SP and double check about fitment (threads for the hoses and actual mounting) before ordering...

 

You could change those fitting if they did not match up- bearing in mind how old the hoses are, check for any wear marks on the hose end.

 

I just had this done to my 1980 GTBi and it was all done without having to remove the engine. I got a factory rebuilt oil cooler, 2 hoses and necessary part from Italian Car Parts in Oregon, USA. I had the work done at Rosso Service, Forrest Hill, MD. Work done in under 8 hours. The oil cooler is easily damaged if not careful, so I understand that they detach the hoses at the cooler last. I chose to have it done by the professionals even though it cost more. Parts were $2.100 and shop was $1,700. It is hard to find an oil cooler, so start shopping now...Not cheap.
