I'm looking for owners of 1980 GTBi willing to post their VIN

This might be a fruitless search, but it would be nice to get a list of known 1980 Bosch K Jetronic cars. I and others quote 24 coupe made during the first half of 1980. My car #31371 was made March,1980. If the run of 24 cars is correct, these transition cars would be quite rare (24 coupes and 29 spyders).

My car had the injected engine put into the 1979 styled coupe (XWX 205/70 Michelin tires, Campagnolo wheels, Nardi aluminum wheel, GTB on the dash(passenger side), GTBi located at the rear, clock and oil temp gauge mounted vertically ahead of the console, window lifts on the console, aluminum air plenum etc. It is these cars that interest me.

There are several different tallies and the range is quite high. I hope we can come up with VINs from Jan to end of July...but, any GTBi using the 1979 bodies as described above should be identified as well.

I realize this will take time and may end up going nowhere, but it's worth a try. Looking forward to hearing from you who have a matching car or know of one.

31327 is reportedly the first Bi 80 injected model.

The OP is trying to reinvent the wheel. There used to be some guy in France who had already done far more than this level of documentation for the entire 308 line.

My own informal similar registry shows 37 serial number 'A' GTBi's. And yours makes 38.

Why January to the end of July? That does not define Ferraris model year. Ferraris model year for 1980 possibly started in February, maybe March and ended in late October, maybe early November.

The 1981 models for USA were rolling off in November.

 

The Car & Driver first injected test car in their Oct 1980 issue was a red/tan B

Wonder who has that car today and doesn't know it. The Oct issue was on the shelf in Sept. figure 3-4 months to get the story written and in print, a month to get the car to the US and in a dealer and out the door from the end of completion at the factory, Probably a Feb-Mar build date at the latest.

I agree with you. I was defining the period that my car entered this world, but want info on all 308 GTBi that fit the description. I am also interested in the GTSi, and hope to do the same for it...My car is dated March 1980 and it seems that the 6th of that month might be the actual date based on the BIN factory bulletin SB00-6 issued 03/07/80...Let's see what happens...

Every single 1980 US version GTB meets that description. .

 

I'm only interested in the injected version, not carbed. And I understand all 1980 cars used the older style body, but only a few were the 'i' cars as stated early on.

As you know, there is a GTB list of cars, so there is no need to possibly cloud the issue of separating the injected cars from all other '80s.

Every single US 1980 Ferrari was fuel injected. You are not listening.

The last carbed car Ferrari made for the US market was a 1979.

If you read the VINs I posted every single one indicates a US version GTB with fuel injection 1980 model year.

Oh, and "Transition Spiders" as you call them. (I call them US 80 Spiders) There are over 340 of them.

The US had by that time tightened up on a LOT of things and the odd business of "Year Model" as well as the new longer VIN number requirements, tightened up on Ferrari's previous "flexible" view of both Model Year and Technical compliance.

If it came to the US/Canada market, thru the Dealer network, it had to comply...

The rest of the world, the "band played on" in many respects, but here, carbs were gone and CATS were ON.
Trying to base any of it on "visual cues" is a lost ball in the weeds, as Ferrari changed construction details constantly, not linked to Model Year at all. You would have to follow the evolution of parts like the 308 Exterior Dorr Handle to even undersatnd my point, I suppose.

I just now saw this list and the VIN designation does show the coding to be for US injected cars, and I can't argue. Just curious, as to where you come up with the list only because I have been looking for quite some time. Did you assemble the data over the years? If so, you deserve a resounding bravo for doing a really great job! Any reason the list wasn't posted years ago (like the GTB list)? This data blows a hole in all other documentation. Thanks for the input.

You've made your point quite clear. The "transition" terminology came from data found in articles I came across in the years following my taking ownership of my car in 1985. Although I resented your initial post for being insulting and demeaning, I do thank you for the data provided. Have a great 4th of July, and maybe someday we might have a beer.

This is not even a drop in the bucket of the data I have collected. I told you that very early on and you blew it off.

Most of what you have been saying is very easily disproven buy a host of sources available in the public domain. yet you refused to listen to several here. .

Like I said before, we are happy to share, we are happy to inform. I for one am not terribly well disposed to have an ill informed armature come here with wrong information and preach to us. and tell us how wrong we are.

As for my sources, like others who do this seriously we are often given material confidentially from good points of origin that are not aware they are sharing. And we share with other like minded people all over the world.

You could have very easily known most of this just by owning a copy of Matthias Urbans book " Handbuch Der Ferrari Serienummeren but that simple step has not even been taken.

 

I have never had a reason to doubt your credentials. What bothers me is your resorting to snide comments and boasting or your infalability. You tell me to pay attention to what you are saying, yet you will not give me equal courtesy by paying attention to the points I am trying to make based on information I have gathered. I am trying to make the point that while all you say is true, you are not addressing what I am trying to prove or disprove...You have chosen to tell me your opinion not trying to verify or discount the information I have obtained. As a reasoning adult of 87 years,I find that you came at me and continue to attack. I will try one last me to explain what I have been told by people I respect and documentation that I have uncovered. The information below is from FerrariChat, certified appraisals, many article and photos over the years. I never disputed you from the get-go...I didn't know who you were/are. Please take time to at least look over what I offed to share.

Nardi vs Momo, GTB on dash vs. GTBi, clock/oil temp mounted vertically vs mounted horizontally, seat pattern of both cars is the same and not like the 1979 version...etc. Not many cars are configured this way (my car manfacture date of March, 1980 is in the same build period as the 1977-1980 steel bodied cars. I can go on, but the appraiser's report speaks for itself (the appraiser has great credentials and car knowledge).

Enough said - I know the car is unique (see Godfry Eaton's The Complete Ferrari, page 341). my car was at the factory in March, 1980 and the VIN bulletin reflects that to be true. I believe you will come to the conclusion that my car's VIN matches (1 digit change by the factory (read the SB00-6 as it is explained).

I totally agree. I see my car is the 5th GTB (31371), and I hope to see how many of the older bodied cars that got the Bosch K-Jetronic system before the fall run of cars. I was told and given info back in 1986 that the factory needed to use the cars with the older bodies were given the Bosch system; these cars (24 coupes and 29 spyders) were given the new patterned seats that would appear on the fall issue of cars, the clock/oil temp pod was vertically mounted to the console ,,GTBi identification on the exterior only and pretty much the car stayed equipped as all previous GTB cars re 14" Campagnolo wheels and 205/70 Michelin tires...the car introduced in the fall were 15" Speedline wheels, a horizontally mounted clock/oil temp pod added to the console. All data I gathered and verified by Ferrari books and sites like this pointed to this small group of cars. The info I sent show evidence that support what I was told. I sent the 2016 appraisal and the factory bulletin SB00-6, photos showing the difference of my early body car(i.e. 1977-80) versus the newer bodied cars labeled as 1980 GTBi whose run started in July 1980 onward until March, 1982 and the QV intro. I have been unable to get my interest in verifying or debunking the info supporting 23 other coupes like mine.
