458 New hub to replace just the bearing?!

I am having to get a wheel bearing kit from Ferrari. They quoted $5,400 for the kit, and I need a brake pad. Driver side was almost worn out , brake pad, other side was fine. They thought the caliper was not opening all the way, and wearing out the pad. As the Dealership dug deeper it seems they will not have to rebuild a caliper, but needs a "kit" for the wheel bearings. Seems they found 5 shims. one was ferrari and the other 4 were not ferrari. So that is where I am today. Plus new brake pad. I don't know the total but it started out when I took it in last week for the recall of the Brake Fluid Cap. I thought "Wow, this is great , I don't have to pay anything for a visit to the shop" Well .............. look at it. Plus I am having the oil changed etc.

 

It sounds like the caliper was seized, which caused excessive pad contact (hence pad wear), and extra heat which could fry the bearing.

 

I think just the parts. The Caliber was going to be $5,000 from Ferrari, but there was no known shipping date or when we would get one. The only choice was a rebuild or a used one. But now we are looking at the kit for the bearings. I guess someone had too many Shems on the car, Tow in or Tow out maybe to severe. I just don't know. I need to call them. I wish it was $5,400 for parts and labor. Ferrari of Atlanta is looking at it and said the caliper is not the problem..... I'm 100 miles north. I will call them Friday. Not my week for cars. My Yukon Denali has a "service ride control" and Evap error. Thought it was fixed yesterday, but the lights all came back on after putting in new parts.

 

Anyone success can replace the bearing alone in the 458..?

Not many people take proper care neither the pistons nor the seals on the calipers… just did it, new seals and pistons thoroughly cleaned to avoid unwanted seizing on the worst minute.

Has anyone been successful removing and replacing a 458 wheel bearing? vs the entire hub assembly?

 

The Dealer did my bearing on the front right wheel. It was $7,500 and the two front shock went out and that was $10,000 the whole bill came out to $22,000
I sold the car the week I got it back home. But it was a fun car for 6 years. but just did not know when the back shocks would go or what else could go south. It was only about $1200 a year to run it the first 5 years. But that burned me out on Ferrari for a while. The cheap part is buying the car.

 

I recently had a rear wheel bearing go out on a trip. Luckily I had a free mechanic (my Dad) so only cost was the parts and a flight back home. The hub assembly is $2200 so it seems a little steep to me that your dealer was charging $5k for the labor, but as we know that's the Ferrari tax.

 

I know, I felt ripped off for the first time. They are very high, but usually they would give me a break on parts etc. But this time friends at the shop would not help me at all. The only discount I got was from the 10% off from Ferrari Club of America, so that was over $2,000. Makes the $170 a year membership worth it. But the dealership burned me out. We have been doing business with them since 1975. I'm now driving a dark side car. I just need a rest from Ferrari Tax. I had lots of $8K to $11K on my 550. Don't give up there is nothing like a Ferrari. Old stuff like the Dino or the 308gt4 I don't mind a independent shop vs. Ferrari Dealership, but on the newer stuff I feel need the dealership. So......

 

I recently replaced a hub due to failed wheel bearing on the rear driver's side. My Dad was going to see if he remove the bearing. I'll see if he ever got around to trying.

 

When you say "dark side car", do you mean Lamborghini or McLaren?

 

Ouch. Yeah that is terribly high prices for that. Also it’s very rare that a shock can’t be rebuilt for about $300 each or all four for about $1000. Just something to keep in mind next time.

I was not. Looked at the special bearing I would have had to buy, tools, etc and just wasn’t worth it for saving a thousand or so dollars and still not knowing if it would work.

True for normal shocks but these are Delphi Magnerides. I have only found a few places in the world that rebuild them and the cost is approximately $800 per shock.

 

I had my calipers rebuilt on the 458 Spider due to excessive track use, which melted the seals.

I also replace pads and tires often, and will deal with any hub issue when the time comes. No shock issues thus far at 45k. Tracking is probably 10x the wear and tear, so I’ve come to expect it.

And the 458 Challenge will eventually need a rear hub, and also gets pads, tires and fluids replaced frequently.

None of this has turned me off to the brand, I’d say it’s quite normal given its use, and is part of the fun. But the costs do add up.

This tops any other of the countless stories about the risks of incomprehensible repair bills. Truly makes me want to just park it until the market rebounds a little.

 

Don't know if you do your own work but replacing it was fairly straightforward. The hardest part was removing it from the axle; Ferrari uses some strong Loctite to seal it so you have to apply heat.

 

I don’t do my own work. The hub ass’y for the Challenge is an expensive part ($4k) and the bearing is not removable.

There is no vibration in the car, just the slightest of play. I’ll keep an eye on it and just bite the bullet when it’s time.

I’ve been remarkably lucky with all my exotics, no problems, just consumables and maintenance.

 

Olsen Motorsports did mine for $1200 for all four. They do tons of motorsport rebuilds. Rebuild a shock is pretty straightforward it’s just obtaining the parts that’s hard.

Where are they located so I can put this in my knowledge base for when the time comes?

 

I am about to replace my rear hub carriers too, bearing were making noises. How did yours go? I am a DIYer garage person, and I wonder do I need any special tool to remove the hub from the axle? or just heat and hammer will do?

 

You will definitely need heat as they used a super strong Loctite type adhesive on the axle splines, and an appropriate sized pulley puller. With those the rest of it is pretty straight forward. Let me see if I can save a pdf from the FSM to upload here for everyone's benefit. You also have to make sure the turn off the parking brake and NOT reinsert the key in the ignition or lock the doors as that will turn it back on.

 

Rear park brake disable procedure and rear hub assembly removal procedure, complete with torque specs.
