I have a 1976 308 GTB and I find that the battery is to tall for the battery compartment. The compartment has plenty of room towards the back but the front is more shallow. I am still able to put the cover and bolts but it is not flush with the floor of the front compartment. This causes my spare tire no to fit properly. My Interstate battery is only about 7 inches tall. I am not aware of shorter batteries. Any suggestions?

There have been 2 Die Hards from Sears in my car during its life. Die Hard is a great battery. The next battery I put in my car will be a Die Hard too. The one that is in my car right now was purchased in Feb. 2005. The battery model number is 22839990. This battery fits fine. I would be really surprised if the GTB and the GTS weren't identical when it comes to the battery compartment. Go to Sears! Good luck.

INTERSTATE battery is one of the best I've used and it's the only battery that lasted almost 5 years for me. But whatever you end up getting make sure you get a BATTERY TENDER.

It's also important the base clamp matches, IMO.....

    That holds it in place.......

Interstate MT34 is correct size including the battery hold down lip at the base. That's what I have now.

Size is "Group 34R", you should also be able to use the universal "Group 78/34". It would be a good idea to also use some plastic battery terminal covers, as the battery cover is metal, and if the fit is that tight, you don't want them shorting out against the metal cover! :)

How much CCA does it have? And How much CCA does a 308 requires?

At least 400-450CCA is ideal. Anything less would be average. 350CCA maybe. :):)

The Interstate Group 34 and Group 34R are 700CCA, but many of the universal size Group 78/34 are 800 or 900 CCA. BTW, the only difference between the 34 and 34R is the 34R has the top terminals reversed, which is typically needed in the Ferrari application for the cables to reach. Many times you can get them to reach with a 34, but best to use the 34R. The "universal" Group 78/34 has both side terminals, and the top terminals are placed along the midline of the battery, so you can orient it either way, and the battery cables "should" reach.

    Hi Folks,

Resurrecting this thread from many years ago!

Just wanted to point out that an Interstate MTZ-34R (AGM) will not fit properly on a '77 308 GTB - albeit the Interstate website states it does:

    https://www.interstatebatteries.com/products/mtz-34r/1977-ferrari-308-gtb-v830l

For the Interstate MTZ-34R, the battery terminals are located towards the front of the battery and there is no enough clearance to place a battery cover. I will be returning the battery tomorrow (should be able to get comparable quality battery for under $400!)

Can anyone recommend an AGM battery that fits correctly (based on experience) in the battery compartment ? (including functional use of the battery hold down clamp and battery cover.)

    Thanks in advance.

    Humberto-

34R fit in my 78 308GTS. If you need shorter, maybe a Group 48? That is what is used in the 360/430 and is a tad shorter in height. Terminals are still reversed like on the 34R

You can get the Group 48 AGM Interstate at Costco for around$180. That is what I put in my 430 Scuderia last year. It is 7 1/2 inches high, versus 7 13/16 inches for the 34R according to Interstate website

Right, that should work height wise. The battery length is 11 inches vs. the 10.25 inches of the battery tray, but the difference on either side (over the tray) is not significant (0.38 inches) and there is clearance on either side. The width of the Group 48 is 6.94 inches vs. 6.85 (for the 34R) - again, not appreciable.

I will definitely look into it.

    Thanks,
    Humberto-

This makes no sense to me?

Just turn the battery around so the terminals are in the back. If the cables won't reach after doing that, use a 34 instead of a 34R.

A Group 34 or 34R fits in my "77 GTB without any problems. There is enough slack in the cables to use either type with the terminals to the rear.

Cables don't reach (at least in my '77) if you turn the Group 34R around or use a straight Group 34 (with the positive terminal on the passenger side) - same outcome. Plus, it is not neat setup stretching those cables to as a far as they can go just to get the battery connected - come on, let's do it right.

I should stated above that I had already tried that.

    Best,
    Humberto-

By the way, the Interstate MTZ-34R fits in my battery compartment w/o issues, the problem is that there is not enough height clearance to put the battery cover.

When you stated "A Group 34 or 34R fits in my "77 GTB without any problems", do you mean including proper placement of the battery cover? Just want to confirm that you are indeed using the battery cover and everything fits as it should.

    Thanks,
    Humberto-

I still don't understand why you are having issues?

A Group 34 (or 34R) is the proper battery!

Yes, I am using the cover. You can see the cover in the picture above. I just took it off to show you the battery.

You need to make sure the battery is sitting under the hold down! If it is not, I could see where you would have a height issue.
