Not hard to believe. In my opinion Bilstien never made good shocks. If I had a 550 they'd go early on.

 

I always looked at Bilstein as being the "other" European damper manufacturer after Koni, but not even in the same league.

 

All the best shock companies made motocross shocks. You lean a whole lot about shocks on a dirt bike. Never heard of Bilsteins on a dirt bike.

 

Worked with Performance Shock in Sonoma on Ohlins for my 996TT and they were tremendously knowledgable.

Wouldn’t think twice about asking them to help with a custom application.

 

Its how they started. Its no accident they are located at Sears Point Raceway.

 

True but a lot of MC shock companies never moved into automotive.

 

Ohlins, Koni, Kayaba (KYB), Showa are (were) the big MX OEM players.

White Power and Fox both did aftermarket MX and off-road truck suspension. WP had some late 80's deals with Husky & KTM for forks I think, but I do not know of any big OEM MX deals.

I guess Marzocci and Ceriani did not as far as I can tell do automotive. I would argue they are smaller players without big OEM deals. I think they did some small unit Italian bikes and maybe some KTMs before they were orange.

So I stick to my premise. The best auto suspensions were developed on the MX track.

Has anyone tried RE Suspension in North Carolina? They are an authorized Bilstein rebuilder.

Sent my dampers to RE Suspension. Just received them. They are an authorized Bilstein rebuilder. $130/each! PSI wanted to bend me over for $700/each! Not happening. RE will even replace the lower bushings for free as long as you provide them.

Did they upgrade the lower seal? If not it will just fail again. The DV and PSI fixes use a larger seal with a new top ring.

 

That’s a good question. I should ask or recommend.

I know they replaced the seals, but not sure about an upgrade. PSI did not mention to me anything regarding an upgrade or did they guarantee against leaks.

If they last 20-30k mi without a leak, I’m content at $130. I’ll worry about it a few engine outs later. My Nero 355 with 30k only had 1 leaking corner.

 

Did you need to provide provide them with a factory spec for the shock pressure?

 

No. They know the specs.
