Steakhouse last night. Was with two people on business so I couldn't snap a pic. Would have gone for sushi, but the two Japanese restaurants are mediocre. One of my guest's wives is a Paris-trained chef and is Japanese. I did take them to a Japanese restaurant in Richmond a few years ago. Both said it is the best Japanese restaurant they've been to outside of Asia. Net I didn't want my Japanese restaurant picks to be tarnished.

lol, makes me think of a conversation yesterday. My friend joined my dad and I for lunch yesterday and said he has to remember to keep Dr. Peppers in stock because when both of his brother-in-law's were over recently they both left to hit the store for them because that's all they drink. lol

I'm in a small town. Not many fine dining options and the chain restaurants have put most of the local restaurants either out of business or they close early. The two Italian places close at 8pm most nights. Our group ate a late Mexican lunch. We didn't feel hungry again until 7:30pm. One of my guests felt like salad and the other was in the mood for Italian. We tried the local indy joints but they both said the kitchen is almost closed. Net we ended up at Olive Garden.

One guest is a medical doctor and the other is a retired US State Department official. Both talked about Paris because, with the State Department, he was stationed there. All the talk was about 2 and 3-star restaurants they've enjoyed there. I was shocked they both liked the Olive Garden. He liked the calamari and the soup he had. She liked the salad. We had two refills on the salad bowl. She looked up Olive Garden locations back home to see if one is close to the hospital she works at. Said it will be her new lunch or dinner spot when working. She was surprised they also own Ruth Chris.

Both are visiting Vancouver in Oct. So promised to make up for Olive Garden with my favorite Japanese restaurant which happens to be a 1-star place.

I'm home now. I normally stop at Chick-Fil-A and get a spicy deluxe combo with a chocolate shake. But I had a big breakfast and wasn't hungry while near there. Ended up getting fried chicken and bag of Arby's curly fries at my favorite grocery store.

Today we have a BBQ at my dads Church. Hot dogs and burgers and assuming people will bring lots of sides.

The BBQ turned out to be at noon. So I now plan on ordering some sashimi, sushi, and a few rolls.

Bought a rotisserie chicken from Costco. Going to have that with pesto linguine. Speaking of Costco. They use to sell bacon wrapped filet mignon. Haven't seen them for a few years though. Would buy them if I saw them.

Found this online and they have a store near me: Bacon Wrapped Beef Filet Mignons | M&M Food Market (mmfoodmarket.com) $56 for four isn't a bad deal. Might give them a try.

That is a good deal for 4 of what seems to be ~ 8 oz steaks. I bought bacon-wrapped filets for the missus once since she loves bacon and also filet mignon. But, she likes her bacon super super crispy, which was a challenge w/o overcooking the steak. I wonder if a pastry torch could do the job?!? Cook steak to a little less than desired, then crisp up the bacon with a torch. Could be a good excuse to try and talk the wife into letting me buy a pastry torch! :D

Faux pho with zoodles. Had shrimp shells in the fridge. Boiled those up, fish sauce, garlic, black pepper, a black cardamon pod, star anise, a few slivers of ginger, cinnamon stick, and some dried chili peppers from the garden (a mix of Thai and Calabrese). Simmer for 30 min. Filter out the solids. Bring back to boil, chuck in the zoodles, heat through. I overdid it on the chili peppers, but flavor was good for a quick pho. Very fragrant.

Put up 10lb's of pork belly to cure, will smoke it in a couple weeks when done and homemade bacon here we come. I love a good BLT with homegrown tomatoes from the garden.

I think a pastry torch would work, maybe sear the bacon to half done, cook steak to desired and finish, if needed, with the torch again? I think I paid maybe $40 for mine plus cans of fuel...which seem to last forever....good for brulee, lighting smoke tubes, lots of stuff. Nice handy kitchen tool.
