Yes, it did exclude blacks and women, racist and sexist, and probably certain other ethnic groups and nationalities were denied membership as well. As far as I know that is no longer the case, but I could be mistaken, I'm not a member. I know they wouldn't have me, think Rodney Dangerfield!
I think it was Groucho who first said: "I wouldn't want to be in any club that would have me as a member."
You hit a pet peeve of mine. The US Tax Code doesn't care what your's or mine's opinions are. While there is the occasional vagueness, in most cases, the Tax Code is clear, as in this case. A non-profit cannot injure benefits to any owner or manager.
I apologize. Somehow, the golf deal will work, one way or another, after all, who golfs? Most every Lawyer on earth. As far as my comment about hospitals goes, all I know is that I was told, and what I see here, the 'for profit' hospitals pay the least, and don't spend money, and the non-profits pay the best, are continuously adding wings, offices and buying the latest in medical technology. I thought a non-profit could only have X dollars 'in the bank', and it it was over a certain threshold then they could lose their tax-exempt status???? So the way to keep that dollar amount down is by spending it? And I have no idea what 'injure benefits' means, typo?
Then what do you do with profit? Put it back into the business as I surmised? Can you give yourself (Board members, Management, employees) pay raises with it? If the owner cannot realize a profit can everyone else?
To me.... these 2 tweets are basically the net of the whole story.... Yasir and the Saudi's win both ways.... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I believe they added a couple of blacks, IBM folks, and I think Condoleeza Rice is a member now? I think it's more the Judges that allow the Lawyers to argue stupid stuff - and rule in their favor. If you are a Lawyer, don't you just simply argue the 'best' you can? And you are either objected to, or overruled?
It's a good thing the Saudis have a lot of money because normal US sponsors are going to drop like flies. Just wait until Kid Rock and Travis Tritt hear about this!
Senate investigation now. Would be crazy if the deal falls apart at this point... given that the PGA Tour has already admitted they couldn't afford a 3-4 year legal battle, and the new increased purses they can't afford with their current revenue.... They would have to go find other funding to basically do the same sort of model (minus LIV) with other equity partners. Mess! Tweet— Twitter API (@user) date
Impossible to compete with that much money, yes..... but the Tour could have done a lot better of protecting themselves as they've seen this coming for years as a slow moving train. Professional golfers are professional athletes..... so just compare the business of a Tour player to an athlete of any other sport. travel to an event, pay your caddie, all other expenses, etc....... miss the cut and you literally get $0 from the event (just whatever money you're getting from your sponsors) golfers are all independent contractors that have no actual contract with the PGA Tour as a league the "majors" of The Masters, US Open, The Open Championship (British), and PGA Championship are all independent events that the PGA Tour has no ownership or control over the PGA Tour operates as a non-profit charity organization the PGA Tour doesn't even "own" their own events.... things like the "Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines" is it's own company that has it's own staff that operates all year just to run that one event All of those things are completely ridiculous and unsustainable compared to most any other major sports league like the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. Any kind of structure that had all players on any sort of contracts that at least guarantee travel expenses for events where they miss the cut and I don't see how the Saudi's could have broken in to compete so easily with LIV.
Is anyone watching on TV? I still do, I like the golf, I like that different guys seem to be in the hunt every time, but I don't care for the music blaring in the background. I don't mean it needs to be totally quiet when guys hit, either, but I don't need the music. Funny how there is not a LIV Women's Tour.....
I am rooting for LIV, but my favorite players are on the PGA and I find myself watching it more. I think they need to get rid of the team concept, doesn't seem authentic. If it was real teams and owners who could buy and trade players, then that would be interesting. I wish most of the courses weren't mickey mouse. They either need to go all in on the party atmosphere or dial it back. I still think they need to attract younger audiences with longest drives, trick shocks, or hole you are allowed to attempt getting player to "back off".
There is a TON of that kind of stuff already going on.... YouTube is full of that type of golf content now I don't think it ever 'needs' to come from the PGA Tour and/or LIV Tour directly... the biggest challenge that isn't obvious to many, is that pro golfers are actually quite boring... some like Phil have a charismatic personality, but most are just boring robots. Celebrity golf (like Steph Curry winning that Tahoe event) is great to watch, I think.... along with lot of creators on YouTube.... that type of stuff only works organically, not coming from the top-down corporate level with Tour players. For LIV's team concept.... I think it can get there.... but they made a huge mistake IMO by naming the teams silly stuff like Crushers, Smash, 4 Aces, etc..... They should have grouped the guys by nationality so fans could naturally gravitate to rooting for them..... Aussies, California guys, Brits, Team Florida Man, etc would have worked better.
I'd like to see one tournament be 'best ball' just for the fun of it. But you would need rules, like you can't hit the same players' shot at every hole, ie, you can't pick/play Kopeka's tee shot, second shot, approach, and then a different guy putts...
I think some of that still eminates from the stuffy 'history' of the PGA, but also, the ones we DO find interesting, the guys that are vocal, are guys that have won before and often, or the press has assigned 'celebrity status' to them. The PGA has shunned Patrick Reed, and Bubba Watson seems to come-and-go, Rory is 'famous', Ricky Fowler is famous for not winning a big one..... If we see or hear a guy that is 100th or 150th on the money list that is rather animated, nobody would care, but if we see a guy that ALWAYS has a cigar in his mouth, we somehow 'identify' with him (trying to remember the guy from about 15 years ago...) We tend to like guys we can semi-identify with.
LIV event last weekend. Lee Westwood finishes dead last in 48 man field. Shoots 20 over par for three rounds, "wins" $120.000.
This is where golf has been out of line with the rest of sports for decades. You're looking at it only through the lens of golf. He's a professional athlete playing in an event. Should he get zero? How much does an NBA player make that loses a game? Or worse, sits the bench and doesn't play a single second? They're on contract to be there. It's normal for any sport, except golf. The idea that pro golfers have been playing events where, if you miss the cut, you don't even get your travel expenses covered for showing up there? That was a broken model.
Individual vs. team sports. All the PGA tour guys knew what they were striving for - the risks and rewards - since junior golf. And do not forget endorsements and sponsors. And may I suggest golf is out of line with the rest of sports because it was designed and intended that way for centuries.
Bud Crawford beat up Errol Spence and won a TKO 2 weeks ago. Spence 'won' 25+ million dollars for losing.... If someone wants to pay someone for competing, good for them.
It is outdated. Most of us yearn for the days when guys competed in sports mainly because they loved the game, but those days left us in the mid-late 70's. The NBA is LAUGHABLE today with 'load management', guys 'taking a night off'... NOBODY did that even 10~ years ago, but today it is common, which makes no sense when you look at how conditioning and diet is sooo much better today, let alone the game is hardly physical at all today. Almost none of these clowns playing today could last in the NBA of the 80's and 90's, they's be beat up and quit. And it's FUNNY that the only guys 'allowed' to 'load manage' are the designated 'superstars', we dare not see a benchwarmer or third string RB 'take a day off', they would be cut in a heartbeat. We sure do see a lot of 'soft tissue' problems today - 'injuries' you cannot diagnose, but guys miss practice, even miss games, and somehow that only happens when they are playing a creampuff, but they seem to be OK for the 'big' games.... I cannot wait to see major pro pickleball or pro cornhole player injuries.... Yeah, rant....
