This will certainly be exciting: https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mo23/monterey/lots/r0148-1964-ferrari-250-lm-by-scaglietti/1367942
I photographed this one today, looking similarly immaculate. But whilst I love them, I can't help feeling a little bit sad that they are so shiny and "new" that there is no room left for any trace of things they've done; the races they've won and lost. I can't help but note the irony that the Le Mans winning 499 P was displayed at Goodwood last weekend still proudly sporting the dirt and detritus from its triumph whilst its near-60 year old brethren look like they've never left the showroom. The photo looks like 6313 (6033). We (Symbolic Motors) purchased that one at a Christie’s Pebble Beach sale back in the later-1990s.
As it is the car of the month, here is my favorite picture from Pebble Beach last year: https://barchetta.mediacenter.plus/-/Events-by-Year-Auction-Concours-News-Race-Rally-etc/2020-2029/2022/Concours/Monterey-Car-Week/Pebble-Beach-Concours-dElegance/Pebble-Beach-Concours-d-Elegance/?v=a&dir=2332967&rd=1964532&i=5244274 I guess you do not see a short and a long nose in the same picture that often....
Thank you. I spent a solid two hours admiring this incredible car at Pebble. I especially like that it’s clean of livery.
Curious what happened with #6053? I was eagerly awaiting the auction and there is no result posted. Did I miss something? Was this a private sale car? https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mo23/monterey/lots/r0148-1964-ferrari-250-lm-by-scaglietti/1367942
I am suspicious that 17 is the same as the earlier sale for a serial number I perceive to have more "smoke".
I’m surprised it didn’t exceed its estimate, particularly considering it was the “Belle of the Ball” for RM this year. I didn’t watch the auction but I’m guessing there was a massive deflation in the room when they announced a no sale.
I’m not an auction authority by any means, but I suppose this dispels the commonly held opinion that these auctions are all for show and everything is resolved ahead of time in a secret back room. Either that, or the “pre determined bidder at an agreed to price” never showed. Either way, doesn’t look great for RM.
Interesting. It appeared to be real bidding but there was not any enthusiasm for the last several million. Anybody actually there that can say how many different bidders there were?
And some people question opinions/views on auction ethics and lack of transparencies, i.e. my long standing lack of belief in much or some of their self-reported results.
I posted these photos previously on FChat, about PB (probably '87 or so) so as these pertain to the LM, and I had never seen one in the live, plus...people actually moved to let you take a pic or 2. Cannot imagine prices then... Hope not to be too repetitive.
