So this morning I took the 458 out, and immediately heard a strange light whistling sound coming from the transmission. After 5 minutes the car made a loud bang and turn it self off on the middle of the road, shifting into neutral first by the way. After that the car normally started without any engine lights, but makes a rattle sound like something is terribly loose under the car. I drove it for 1 minute (luckily) to my house, but 100% can not drive it anymore. If feels like something came loose from the transmission. I never had that problem. The e-diff is serviced a few months ago. The strange thing is that on Sunday I drove the car for 2 hours straight without problems. It sat over night and than immediately 2 days later the problems accured... ANYbody could help? My mechanic (J scuderia in NJ, which is amazing) is on holiday till Aug 29...
The E-Diff Recovery light popped up a few months ago, so the DCT fluids were all changed and no problems since. Drove it 400 miles and now this happend. There is a very mechanical skirping rattle sound coming - what seems to be the transmission - only when driving.
Can't say for sure but *if* a hard part broke, Lux Tec out of Austin, TX has proved that they can source hard parts (gears, etc) and rebuild the DCT. Just a resource to keep in your back pocket as this get diagnosed. Best of luck and please update us.
First question, do you have a power warranty??? Next, where in Jersey? I am very tight w/ the service manager @ wide world in Rockland....
Thank you very much, will do. I have a felling that it is indeed the transmission. BUT, the weird thing is that it just shifts normally... When I rev the engine on Neutral nothing happens, no weird sounds. BUT when I start the car, a small pop comes from the exhaust. NO LEAKS! That makes it very suspisous, that it's maybe the cat?
I had it happen to another car of mine, (not an e-diff, and an older car with less fancy electronics), symptoms were an initial whine coming from under the car at the rear followed by a loud bang and loss of drive. Turned out a couple of ring gear teeth had sheared off inside the diff. Diff then kind of self destructed internally. There was no prior warning, and no oil leaks, destruction was contained inside the diff housing.
… the fact that you had your diff serviced recently, and this happened soon after is concerning. Could be coincidence but I don’t believe in those
Could be indeed, especially because there are no check-engine lights from the E-diff or anything else!
I honestly was thinking the same, but didn't want to say it out loud. Well, the only possibility is a good diagnosis.
Sorry to hear of your troubles. I have occasionally heard a speed sensitive whine from the rear of my Speciale, but not consistent. Please update this thread as you learn more, I have tagged it to watch as I may have a similar issue developing. Thanks.
I'm curious OP. What driving mode on your manettino is your typical go to default and the mileage on your car? This may be helpful for some of us.
Dude, get your car up on Jack stands, pull the undercarriage plastic shields off, and inspect it. If you don’t know what you’re looking at, take a video and photos and post it and we can diagnose. Pretty much any leak we can diagnose and see what’s going on. Need photos or a specific description. “Loud bang” and “rattle” doesn’t tell us anything. Post up some photos. A loose/missing bolt or clamp letting loose on a half shaft would be about the best thing you could hope for at this point.
Thank you, will do. Today I started the car, and started with a little "bang", at this point I'm extremly confused. I called Excotics USA in NJ (Mike) and he told me to bring it in coming Monday.
I understand and you are right 100%, I have only 2 left hands. If someone lives around Red Bank and has nothing to do...
