Just picked up a 458 - question about OEM charger

Is it normal for the OEM 458 charger to alternate between the amber (“charging”) light to the green (“fully charged”) light in intervals of about 10 seconds once the car is fully charged? I’ve left my car charging overnight and this morning I noticed the lights alternate, and the green light does not remain lit permanently. The user manual didn’t provide much guidance here. Thanks!

Alternating every 10 sec isn't normal, oem CTEKs are known to fail, so are batteries. You need to get it checked out.
I would suggest disconnect the CTEK until you sort it out.

 

I got mine (458) a few weeks ago with the oem red charger. After turning green it stays green. I got in the car a couple weeks later and noticed it went to amber for a few minutes when I got out. Then it switched back to green and stayed there within the hour. It was interesting after a 3hour drive it wasn’t green from the start…. The dealer told me the battery was tested and passed.

Mine was like that. After a few months it wasn't really charging the battery properly. Bought a new ctek and got the adaptor to fit the car off eBay. No issues since

 

As soon as you open the door you can hear the car come alive thus a draw. The charger kicks in as there is an amperage drop. Normal for the light to change.

 

Agree, same as mine that works properly. Also, even after a long drive, you mentioned 3 hours, once I plug in the maintainer, the light isn't green. It takes a little time for it to turn green, that is normal too.

Congrats! What exact type of battery do you have?

 

OEM charger is too weak (0.8A) to keep battery in good condition and will lead to battery failure in long term. Get the solution proposed here and your battery will last for long time. I’ve burned one 458 battery with OEM charger after 4 years and after that I changed to CTEK 5.0. I’ve used CTEK 5.0 for my 360 Modena for past 11 years and battery is still like new.

 

Buy a AntiGravity Battery and call it a day. I haven’t used the factory charger since I bought the car and it starts up every time with no issue even if I leave it for weeks at a time.

So you all are saying the Ferrari charger i hit with my 2019 488.... the bigger black box version isn't doing as good of a job as a CTEK would do?
