It was a deal with selling a Pista to the dealer and buying the Speciale. Probably could have gone lower on the Speciale, but we worked it out on both ends for the cars.

How do you like the speciale compared to the pista?

A quick review would be appreciated.

    Happy to.

I started my Ferrari journey with a 458 Italia, then ordered an 812 SF, Portofino, then Pista. I nearly purchased a Speciale at this point before considering the Pista, but my dealer said he could get me one and we specced a great one. It wasn't one of those situations where I never looked back...I did, frequently. Did I make the right decision, should I have just gotten what I initially wanted?

My career is in sound. My ears are tuned to hear intricacies. Growing up, my favorite trait of a Ferrari was sound. Hearing one on the road would haunt my dreams. Of course they looked special, but it was the sound. The 430 Scud is an all-time favorite of mine, as far as presence and sound. When I picked out the 458, I thought maybe I should just get the Scud, but it would be a rather intense first Ferrari.

I enjoyed the audio of the 458, the 9k redline, and the luxurious interior (It was nicer than I expected it to be). I liked the styling, but didn't love the front, and I was missing that iconic side vent. Once I sold the car, I missed it and that is when I was looking at a Speciale. The Pista seemed unobtanium to me and my short purchase history with the brand.

The Pista is beautiful in every sense of the word. The downshifts are thrilling, the speed incredible. I'd get out of the car, turn around and look at it's genius, but never feel quite whole. Something was lacking, and it really bothered me. I mostly fixed that with an inconel X pipe from Novitec. The sound was immediately better, more focused and pure. When I got above 4K RPM, it would disappear a little, and though I would have been happy if this was what it sounded like from the factory, I was still missing the scream and 9K RPM redline. I tried to tell myself that the 812 SF would replace that, and no V8 would be as good anyway. Then I swapped that for an 812GTS, and that is even more impressive.

Having an SF90 AF Spider coming soon, and my dealer getting a low mileage 458 Speciale in stock, I made the switch. Most of my driving is weekend, around town. I have a fun little route onto the freeway and through some tunnels with some on/off ramps that allow for a little driving. Not usually much more than that besides the odd canyon drive if I have time. The Speciale fits this perfectly. It's immediately more sonorous, unfortunately less dramatic on downshifts, but more raw and entertaining on these short drives. Also, I tend to like the interior more, with the exception of the graphics on the TFT screen. The passenger "knee pads" are much more interesting than the boring Pista glove box area, and the carbon doors have more carbon. I had every option ticked on the Pista, in matte CF, but the gloss dash is a timeless look.

The Speciale is not as fast. This suits MY needs around town as well. The tradeoffs are speed and some looks. The gains are emotion, rawness, and a more visceral experience. I'm totally satisfied with my switch. Watching the Pista be driven away on the flatbed was difficult, even for my daughter whom I did not know cared at all about this car. It was sunny and the Rosso Fuoco is hard to beat in those conditions, but it's nice to have Rosso Corsa back in the garage, and the collection feels well rounded and special.

Wow great story! Im like you...sound is my thing and growing up, my favorite trait of a Ferrari was sound too. I miss my 458 as well...I too thought the front of the 458 was too boring and so I sold the car to get a speciale end of 2020, I hesitated and prices went straight up and so I missed the boat and I regret it everyday...$330k one owner car 3k miles #$#%@&*! Anyways, I am looking for a speciale or a pista. The speciale for sound or the pista for the work of art.
    Thanks for your write up.

Not yet….but I will. I know yours is quite insane! I’ll have to hear it some time. I’m inclined to think an x pipe exhaust will be enough to craft the sound a bit.

I hope I like the sf90. Otherwise I should have kept the Pista! Who knows where prices will go, but all I know is they’ll never make another car like either of those.

Being that it is a SpecialeA (Aperta) offering prices are generally over 900K. Ebay is no place to sell a Ferrari tho it does give it some circulation in the marketplace which can't hurt.
