Hello guys, after some years of research and a gruelling 8 hour session yesterday, I've come to share with you my research regarding the F40 racecars. The only information I'm missing is the VIN number of the Simpson Engineering Ferrari F40 GTR, the V12 F40. Any further information gathered will be added to this post.

    Ferrari F40 Racecars

    Michelotto Versions:
CSAI-GT: Named after the Commissione Sportiva Automobilistica Italiana's Italian GT Championship. Least modified version, exterior largely untouched, centre-lock rims fitted.
CSAI-GT '94: Same as CSAI-GT with upgraded mechanicals.
LM IMSA GTO '89: Same as Competizione/LM IMSA but with stock F40 road car headlights.
LM IMSA GTO '90: Same as Competizione/LM IMSA but could have headlights covered for aerodynamic purposes and all rims could be fitted with turbofans or not.
Competizione/LM IMSA: Large single piece headlights, 3.0L engine, new aero including front splitter and rear wing, diffuser, and bodywork.
Competizione/LM GTC: Same as Competizione/LM IMSA with a "slightly different aerodynamics package".
GTE: Same rear wing as Competizione/LM IMSA with new front splitter and rear diffuser, with 3.5L engine, 6-speed lever actuated manual sequential gearbox from the 333 SP.
GTE II: New single-plane, larger rear wing, 3.6L engine, carbon ceramic brakes, stronger 6-speed lever actuated manual sequential X-Trac gearbox.

The initial part of the VIN is the same for all Ferrari F40s: #ZFFGJ34B0000XXXXX, with the last 5 characters, represented here by "XXXXX" differing between cars.

    Notes:

    15 F40 Competizione/LM IMSA
    6 F40 GTE/GTE II
    31 Michelotto cars in total.
33 Competizione Conversion cars in total.

Michelotto built a total of 18 F40 LM chassis and converted one (serial 74045 which was originally a pre-production Ferrari F40 built by Michelotto)
chassis to the same full F40 LM specification under erial number 13 that was previously skipped. While 17 was considered an unlucky number in Italy,
that number was skipped too, so in the end, a total of 19 chassis with Michelotto built numbers 1 through 20 were built as listed above.

I believe the Simpson example could be based on a chassis that had its original VIN removed, possibly from a burned road car out of Japan many years ago, it is not registered as an F40 in the UK. A trade HPI would reveal the VIN it is registered under. It made an appearance at Silverstone recently still with the V12.

This is actually very interesting. I've tried to buy one of those "Basic Checks" in a UK car registration website for the J848 JUY plate, but I got an error on that and I've sent an e-mail to the website's support to see what they can do.

I've also sent Simpson Motorsport a message on Facebook and WhatsApp but they haven't answered yet. For now it's a relative dead end, we have to wait for more information.

80726 is the F40 in which my friend B.F.M.M.S. crashed fatally 30 years ago in Northern Italy. Both driver and passenger were killed.
Remnants of 80726 ended up in the greater Modena area.

A "car vertical" online check on that number plate may also reveal the VIN.

I believe the car was owned by an Italian racer where it competed for some years, it appears to still be with the same owner since it was UK registered back in 2003.

Simpsons also built up a wrecked US spec road F40 into a racer, the current owner of that car here in the UK posts occasionally in this section. I don't think that one is UK road registered though.

Is that the example that was pulled from an auction a few years back in the UK when the past life of the VIN was exposed? the bubble roof car? If so I believe it has/had links to Eurospares and the auction claims about being destined to be an LM were never proven.

You could just buy, and read, Keith Bluemel’s F40 book. He has contacted Simpson’s and the story of this car, while disappointing, is documented in there. There is even a chassis number, of sorts! The lack of Ferrari badge on the front of the car is perhaps a clue.

This is actually not true. Yes, I am from Gen Z and only 21 years old, but I still do read books from time to time. In fact, ironically, most books I have are in a digital form and backed up in a safe place, but they are books regardless.

Furthermore, it takes quite a bit of experience and dedication to gather all the data I posted above, one with less skill could easily get lost in the poor documentation that exists on the Internet.

We are not completely useless Mr. Massini! Well, some of us aren't, I've dealt with my fair share of braindead people from my generation.

I'll add it to my wishlist, in the meantime, would it be possible for you to share the last 5 digits of the VIN with us? It really is the only information missing and would help us a bunch.

Thanks in advance and thank you for the book reccomendation!

Simpson got a redundant post-crash-test F40 chassis tub, without a chassis number.
Once completed the car was registered as a Simpson Ferrari GTR with a Simpson chassisnumber "SE02GL1576AD45659".
The "SE" part of this VIN code refers to Simpson Engineering, the "GL15" is part of the company's postcode.
This car must not be confused with the regular V8 F40 also built by Simpson (in 2006) on chassis 80856.

Really sorry to say but absolutely everything you posted can be found easily in the excellent Keith Bluemel book "Ferrari F40", published by Porter Press International in September 2022, one year ago.

This is spectacular, thank you for the information, I will add it to my notes!

Unfortunately, I've been looking at the book online, it's 80 euros, completely out of my range, remember, I'm a university student on a tight budget! Hopefully I can purchase it in the future. I'm working on information available online, which scarcer and less accurate.
