I checked the GEARBOX OIL level in my 1999 355F1 spider. The dipstick on the top of the GEARBOX showed a correct level between the min and max marks. However, the dipstick under the cover of the GEARBOX OIL tank showed below minimum. The car was cold when I checked both places. Should I be concerned?

You know the F1 system and gearbox use different fluids and are checked in different places, right? (There is only one place to check fluid level in each) Have you looked at the owner's manual?

Also, there is no "gearbox oil tank." But there is an engine oil tank. Not sure what you think you're checking but again.... please spend some quality time with the owner's manual before you do something tragic to your car.

Here is a photo of the oil tank. The engine is a dry sump. Do not check oil level when the car is cold. Check the oil level within five minutes after running the car at normal temperature. If you overfill the oil tank, oil can get into the intake manifold. Level should be between minimum and maximum on the stick.

Do you mean the one on the right was below minimum? "F1 hydraulic fluid"

Yes, the F1 tank shows below minimum when checked "cold". Should this be checked after operating temperature?

The workshop manual was so ambiguous, I can't be sure. Probably best for a technician to answer this.

e.g. In the Workshop Manual in the bleeding section...

Since the clutch uses the F1 hydraulic tank, I assumed that's what the manual is talking about, but then the manual shows a picture of the transaxle fill point!

Perhaps the diagram is just to show the clutch bleed point and it is assumed we know where the F1 tank is.

F1 hydraulic oil tank was an off the shelf part and not designed for that purpose. It really was not large enough. ATF has a high degree of thermal expansion and in some extreme cases will overflow the tank. The full/low marks are not good indicators. In extreme service when cold and the system up to pressure I just make sure the level is above the metal plate in the bottom and the seam in the tank.

Same is true of the PS fluid. The original PS tank was much larger. The late tank is really too small and should only be filled to the seam in the middle. They overflow as well in extreme use and the Challange cars had an overflow hose in the cap.

I meant to say between the metal plate in the bottom and the seam of the bottle.
