The biggest threat to any insurance company you and I have is convincing a state regulator, particularly in California, that an insurance company fraudulently denied coverage. The consequence can be the loss of their license to operate. There are lawyers who specialize in this area. I know one of the best in Texas. http://www.shidlofskylaw.com/ They might be able to give you a referral to someone in California.
I'd start here. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/members/joezaff.59835/ Joe is an attorney in PA, yeah, I know, you're in California, but he's dealt with this stuff and is really sharp, he also hates it when a car guy is getting screwed. I'm going to PM you his contact info, give him a call. D
I have had bad experiences with Hagerty in the past as well. I know they seem all friendly up front. but then try to make a claim.... its not so friendly. I don't use them any more... they are an FCA sponsor etc... but not worth the money...
we know they're 50-100% more for most Ferraris, but the argument was always they had better service and claims support, maybe not, especially now they've gone public.
Terrible, service. we had a 1960 356 B roadster with them for years, when it came time to cancel the policy because I sold the car - they hassled for months so they would not have to refund the premium.... it was that petty. stay away.
Sorry to hear of the troubles with Hagerty. I'm curious if OP had "agreed value" coverage with Hagerty?
https://americancollectors.com/ I tried Hagerty's many years ago, almost immediately switched to these guys, just didn't like the vibe I was getting from them, I guess. Two years later, I had very minor accident with the Dino that became a full repaint, north of $25K as I recall, which they paid for without a blink. D
Hi Rob, When you say they charge 50-100% more... who are the comparable classic insurers you're thinking of? Asking for myself, not a friend. Lol
What is the $ value that Hagerty agreed to insure your car for? Can you get an independent appraisal of the value of your car after repairs and then file a claim with them for the difference?
Aren’t agreed value policies only valid for a total loss? I don’t know how these specialty insurers write policies.
If I understand, it seems the issue is matching the patina (fade/ chips/etc.) of the damaged panel to the rest of the car. I'd think this type of "paint" does not fall under the usual body and fender shop repair... look for paint code, spray, and polish). I have seen "rat rods" where the paintwork is aged. Further, Gibson Guitar has their custom shop where they make new paint look old. With that said, I wish the OP good luck.
Contact Chip Davis at Expert Auto Appraisals. He deals with this kind of thing every day, with these kind of cars. https://expertautoappraisals.com/
Let me update you guys on the very recent trends in finding insurance for your collector car. For a 1993 348 Serie Speciale, VG to EX condition, $90K agreed value with slightly higher liability coverage (due to a liability umbrella policy requirement). I have had Liberty Mutual forever on everything and they are not renewing my coverage, but are referring clients to Safeco. All quotes are for individual cars except for Safeco. Safeco - $1260 annually in a group policy (about the same as with Liberty currently) Hagerty - $1600 annually American Collectors - $4000 annually Grundy - $600 annually currently with a moratorium on new policies in LA County GEICO - we don't do these USAA - call American Collectors I am not finished with my search yet.
I tried getting insurance for my new Ferrari from Hagerty first and they turned out to be the worst experience. They made me fill out some stupid form first asking me to list all my previous supercar experience and then they ended up declining me for some stupid reasons. Just as well. After all my further online research of them, they seem like overall kind of a sh*t company. Even my sales rep from the official Ferrari dealership told me best to avoid them because they have a bad rep of making people's lives hell when they tried to submit a legit claim and that I should just try calling my local State Farm office. Ultimately, I ended up just calling my local State Farm office and they had me fully covered same day for a reasonable rate without any B.S. If you live in Ohio recommend calling my State Farm Agent Nick Cone at (614) 577-1055 if you're looking for the best experience.
So you joined Saturday and have posted the same thing in multiple threads just trying to bad mouth hagerty?? I've had hagerty for years and they have been great work with.
Good for you. Just sharing my experience man. Think whatever you want about it. No worries. Just trying to be helpful to the next person navigating the same B.S.
I ended up insuring all my cars with State Farm. $325 all in for a classic Ferrari, classic Porsche, and modern BMW, with none of the restrictions that one encounters with collector insurance. I still maintain that Hagerty is not the company they once were, but everyone has to make their own choices. I posted this in 2023 to suggest people review their policies and maybe ask a few questions to avoid unpleasant surprises like I had. Life goes on!
