Rallying (like hillclimbing) is competing against the clock, so the close racing the public likes to see is absent.

Yes, you are right. Personally I liked participating in rallying and hillclimbing a lot more than circuit racing which I soon gave up. It's you against the clock, with no interference from other competitors. I never felt comfortable racing wheel to wheel, with the risk of contact, etc ... I didn't like driving aggresively, and it wasn't enjoyable to me. Also, you compete against yourself, you don't get into conflicts like on circuits, and the atmosphere among participants is better, mostly in hillclimbing which is more like club racing.
But the public likes to watch close racing, aggression, contacts, etc .. and it's easier to showcase that on a circuit.

But most rallying and hill climbing is at 11/10ths. F1 rarely gets past 9/10th...always making the tires last and pit stop strategy. And rallys and hill climbs rarely cry about the weather. For flat out racing where you can't let up because you don't know where the other car is, WRC is proving far more satisfying as a viewer.

Pirelli set to abandon C2 shift for F1 2024 after Japan prototype test

Pirelli looks set to abandon a shift of its C2 tyre compound for next year after trials of a prototype at Formula 1’s Japanese Grand Prix showed no improvement.

As part of F1’s tyre test rules, Pirelli handed out two sets of the prototype softer C2 compounds to each driver for Friday practice at Suzuka last month.

However, initial feedback from the running of the modified C2 showed that it had not delivered the performance step hoped for, which means that Pirelli will now almost certainly stick with the current compounds into 2024.

Asked by Autosport about the conclusion of the Friday test in Japan, Pirelli’s head of car racing Mario Isola said: “Looking at the data, and also considering the track evolution, I believe that the prototype doesn't have the grip that we were looking for.

“So, we will probably stay on the current C2 for next year. Without a clear result, a clear step in grip, there is no reason to change and introduce a new compound when we have the current C2 that is working well.

F1 could ditch 18-inch wheels for 2026 in bid to drop car weight
Formula 1 could move away from current 18-inch wheels when the next generation of rules come into force in 2026, as part of a push to make the cars lighter.

Teams given more testing freedom by the FIA
While the wind tunnel combined with the sim produce pretty accurate results, there is still some things that slip through the net. The porpoising issue in 2022 was a perfect example of that with the aerodynamic phenomenon not appearing during the team’s in-house tests.

But areas like that, as well as a team’s ability to develop their car, will be improved from now on with the limit on promotional events rising from 100km to 200km, equating to around 40 laps of a typical circuit.

Some other minor changes made are in regards to the components used and the demonstration events. In terms of the latter, teams will no longer be required to inform their rivals if they undertake a test and for the components, a rule change stipulates that parts used on old cars for testing must have featured in a race weekend.

This could mean a race to the bottom to obtain £20M capital expenditure.

And the recipients will be: Williams, Haas, Alfa Romeo and Alpha Tauri ?

How about F1 package the cars to be a bit smaller instead? I feel this would bring better racing in corners than the behemoth size they are now

In fact, apart from the routine maintenance, some of the repairs on heavily damaged cars achieved within a very short time are very spectacular.

Why stop there? Have half the field drive in reverse, then have the top five from each direction advance, then have those guys race on a figure-eight course. All the participants should also have their DRS buttons replaced with old-time car horns that go 'AOOOOO-GAH!".

The winner gets forced to tow a boat anchor for the real grand prix the next day.

I think they should have the lead mechanic and engineer drive the sprint race. 1 mandatory pit stop, change drivers and it should be run on full wets dry or not lol :)
