Weren't Mondials more expensive than the 308/328 two seaters? Given the Mondial uses the same running gear but has a longer wheelbase and is wider, of course the Mondial would be more expensive to manufacture. The 308/328 were the entry level cars. We know know Greg always pays a premium price, even if a "identical item" is cheaper.
The later Mondials had the 3.4L V8 engine, same engine that came in the 348. And I would expect it would have cost more from new than the 308/328/348 models at the time. Maybe.
I know this thread is about the Mondial and I just added a link to a article about the Ferrari 365 GT4/400/412 but there is a method to the madness. Firstly, the 365/400/412 series gets about the same kind of love as a Mondial. Secondly, they are much better cars than their reputation suggests - and lets face it, its the automatic transmission technology of the time that now dates the 400/412 series so much. Ditto for the Mondial - they drive really well but the extra weight they lug around blunts the performance compared to their 2 seater sisters. Thirdly, there is a line in the article that Greg (and every other Mondial owner) can relate with. "While I was happily enamored at first sight, I also remember everyone making fun of me. "400i?" they proclaimed with a wince." Like the author, I really like the 400/400i in marrone - almost in way that one shouldn't but some how does. https://marqued.com/editorial/66ssqqIZjQUNwhPWWquF3g/enzo-ferrari-drove-a-boxy-ferrari-why-dont-you P.S I do hate it when every Ferrari 365/400/412 advertisement or story tries to cobble up some direct lineage to the immortal 365 GTB/4 Daytona when they share so little except being front engined v12s, made in the same factory with the same Pininfarina stylist - Fioravanti. The Ferrari 365 GT4 / 400 GT are good cars without needing the Daytona to boost its desirability.
Having driven Klinks 1st 365GT/4 - I'm a great fan as a long distance car .. Did the 400 series autos have the GM400 gearbox ? IMO the best auto of the 60s/70s by far
GM400, but it didn't really gel well with the V12 and injection until you hit about 160kph. Then it's fine.
I don't think the author cared too much about the opinions of others but when you get ignorant morons passing comments about cars they don't know anything about other than perceived image, you gotta admit, it gets tiresome real fast. I have a friend who adores Ferrari's (even likes the 400 a lot), owned a 458 and a 550 but still bags out on the Mondial. He certainly didn't think much of Rob's gorgeous blue chiaro Mondial QV, which is a lovely lovely lovely car.
What also irks me about so many clueless journalist articles like this is the constant references to what Enzo was thinking. These writers are apparently mind readers who were close friends of Enzo. "Enzo wanted the 365 GT4 2+2..." Show me any evidence for this statement. The facts are that Enzo sold the road car business to FIAT in 1968, thereafter he had nothing more than a symbolic role in anything other than running the race team. Once Fioravanti finished the overall design, the remaining decisions were made by faceless FIAT people, including the accountants, who did everything they could to shave cost - witness the plastic backs on C4 seats, the recycled 365GT door handles, etc, etc. The worst sin was using a gearbox taken from a BMW sedan, purely for cost reasons. The Ferrari 5 speed in the 365GT2+2 is a delight to use, the C4/GT4 unit is just a gearbox. 365GT4's are great cars in their own right, 150mph cars that can carry 4 people in comfort yet still hustle through the bends. That should be enough for anyone.
