ESPN has bailed out! Knowing F1, Liberty and the LV tourist major domos there’s probably a media blackout. Is anybody watching Sky actual?
Welding drain covers have been a standard part of tracks for decades. Remember Grosjean in Malaysia? Seems Vegas skipped that part and the session lasted a whopping 9 minutes. It's currently 15 degrees C in Vegas, so it's much warmer than what was rumored.
FIA: "Concrete frame around a manhole cover that has failed. Now need to check all the other manhole covers, which will take some time. Will be discussing with circuit engineering team about length of time it will take to resolve and will update with any changes to schedule"
Yeah seems like a very comfortable evening to me. Supposed to drop only to about 12C at about Midnight, which is still warm enough.
so digging up and replacing concrete frame(s) then having to resurface those areas? JFC someone call Caesars and see if we can borrow their parking lot
That would be horrible. They do have a couple hours and surely enough workers to get it done. I think they will run FP2
Planet F1 Formula 1 aborted the opening practice session for the Las Vegas Grand Prix after a drain cover shattered the floor of Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari. The session saw just seven minutes of track action with Charles Leclerc on top of the timesheet ahead of Nico Hulkenberg before the red flag was waved for Sainz’s stricken Ferrari. With the FIA revealing it was a manhole cover that broke Sainz’s floor, the session was cancelled on safety grounds.
The bad news. The track destroyed the Ferrari of Sainz which might jeopardize the race. The good news. Leclerc was fastest.
IMO they should have run some test laps with a spare car or something. I don’t know how you fix is quickly. Maybe weld it and use an epoxy filler. But what about other covers?
This last happened at the 2019 Azerbaijan GP Practice. They had 320 manhole covers to check and had the F2 Qualifying up n running 3 hours later.
