Hi @davew, incidentally, you included your statement in my quote ;) So, to prevent any confusion, that's what @davew answered:

"Perhaps this is why none of my model cars are selling on eBay. I was not aware of the cost issue."

A question I would like an answer to also. I’m smelling a scam going here.

That's the real problem, as I see it. When buying internationally, you get hit with high shipping costs and sales tax. It makes the platform completely uncompetitive, which has had a negative effect on the quality and quantity of what has been offered there in recent years. For this, and a variety of other reasons, eBay has been on a downward spiral for quite a while.

You can bet that eBay uses that cash for a long time before remitting it to the taxing and customs authorities. I’m sure they have an operating agreement to make remittances on a periodic basis, not immediately, and probably deduct a fee for doing so.

Whether the money is with eBay or the tax people is immaterial. It is an inequitious tax anyway.

That's the way I see it, to the point where I use a mail forwarding service for high value items. I would rather pay for shipping twice than pay an even larger amount in sales tax for something bought out of state or internationally.

I have my doubts as to whether or not it makes it there at all. When I buy something from, for example, the UK, who knows if eBay actually remits the tax proceeds to a third party (i.e. my state), given that the seller and buyer are, respectively, oblivious and not involved?

Yes, that’s implicit, I was just commenting that not only is it unfair, it’s probably abused by eBay,

My understanding is the book was published specifically to record and depict Dexter Brown's work on Ferrari related compositions from the start of his career in the 1960's right up to modern day

Limited to 500 copies each book is individually numbered.
Signed by both Dexter Brown and Simon Khachadourian
Printed on high quality art paper
    304 large format pages
Linen bound and presented in a slipcase

I have noticed with a few of my recent book purchases that some of the images reproduced are of quite poor quality, by which I mean blurred or out of focus. I'm not sure if this is down to the original source material or something in the publishing process. It is certainly not something I'm finding with all books, however.

At the weekend I received Seventies Motor Racing, just published by Palawan. This features the photography of Franco Lini with text by Doug Nye. Previous Palawan purchases have been expensive but of very high quality. Most disappointing, therefore, that this new volume, whilst it includes some fine images also includes quite a number that are not up to scratch (as above, I am not clear whether this is down to a deliberate decision to include poor quality photographs or whether it is a publishing issue).

I'm not sure if this will demonstrate what I mean given it is a photograph of a photograph from the book and a random example. The content of the photograph is not particularly rare or interesting - not, I think, enough such that you would choose to publish it regardless of quality - but the image is not sharp (you would expect the lead car, Stewart's Tyrrell, to be in focus and not blurred) and the colours are slightly washed out. This would be disappointing in any book but particularly so given the price and normal high standard of Palawan publications.

If you are considering purchase of this volume I do suggest viewing a copy prior to purchase so you can make an informed decision. You may, of course, have a different view to mine!

For those stateside who are interested in Arnaud’s new Ferrari Can-Am book, Autobooks-Aerobooks will be getting a few copies in the next week or two. Shipping costs will likely be more reasonable for those in the U.S.

I just received my copy of the 330GTC book by Maurice Khawam. I thought it was nicely done; there are a few photos that aren’t reproduced very well but all in all a nice book full of info on the 330. I have always admired the 330GTC such a handsome design; typical Pininfarina beauty.
I did find an error in a description of a process on page 81. The heading on the paragraph “ Exhaust Gas Recirculation “ is incorrect. The heading should read “Positive Crankcase Ventilation “ to match the descriptive text of this process shown on that page.

Also a little fun fact, at least for me, haha. On page 172 there is a photo of a blue 365 GT 2+2 with a license plate on it that a friend of mine owned in the early eighties, he didn’t own a Ferrari but thought he would grab the Ferrari name before someone else did. When I went to visit him in my wife’s Fiero(1986 or so) he thought it would be fun to set the Ferrari plate in its place on the Fiero and take a photo; well for some reason I still have the photo. I haven’t seen my friend in many years but I assume he sold that license plate to the owner of the 365 which I think was Greg Garrison but I could be wrong. Mr. Garrison lived in Montana in the early 90s. is the reason for the assumption.

Just out of interest what would a plate like FERRARI be worth ?

It may be possible to purchase a license plate but in most states it could not be transferred to another vehicle as they are considered property of the state*. In Florida the seller is required to return the plate to the local taxing or registration agency. The plate is not transferred with the vehicle. I’ve actually kept a couple of vanity plates that I cherished, and never heard from the authorities.

*There’s at least one exception in Florida. You can buy an old (no newer than about 1985, I think) and register it with your vehicle of the same year. The authorities have to inspect it to make sure that the plate is authentic and serviceable. I’ve had them on 1967 and 1975 Ferraris.

In Montana the individual owns the plate and it can be transferred from one person to another or re registered on another car. I owned a personalized plate for 45 years and used it on several cars over the years; my brother and I transferred it back and forth a few times.

So what happens when they eventually return the plate to the transport authority.
Do they sell them onto another interested individual ?

Good question; I think it would be up to what someone will pay for it.
