Put another way, an Artist is trying to please only a single customer; a Designer must please many customers if a venture is to be financially viable.

John: Who are the 3 designers with work on page 48? The bottom one looks like it could be Tom Matano. Overall, these 3 look to be folks that came from Opel based upon the techniques and surfacing.

Hard to imagine ACCD isn’t the king anymore.

When I was in school during the early 90’s they were a powerhouse. I remember the talent that came out of there during that time and they were unbelievable!

I distinctly remember sitting in the library of CIA looking at the ACCD work in Car Styling and getting a knot in my stomach because I knew I was at the wrong school. Biggest mistake of my life was not immediately transferring to there or CCS. Unfortunately I was naive and thought I could make the most of CIA since I didn’t have the money left to transfer and start again. What the CIA ID department did at that time was borderline criminal IMO. Luckily several got hired but the school had zero credit in them doing so.

Hopefully ACCD gets back on top but for now I send everyone I can to CCS.

Was CIA touting Guiseppe Delano as a star graduate that went to Detroit? I knew him from my Chrysler summer program that we were both in. Johnny Schwarz just loved Guiseppe.

Even by the 1990s Chuck Jordan was publicly complaining about ACCD Trans program. A very significant point since GM had been the great supporter of the program. Chuck's own son was a graduate of the place (we graduated together). Fast forward to Chuck's death and he endowed CCS and not ACCD. I understand that ACCD took notice of this occurrence.

I am not hopeful for ACCD turning it around for Trans. The school's focus appears to be intent on other programs based upon what one sees and the school talks about in their alumni communications. It is a real shame and disheartening to a graduate of the place. They do a fine job of trading on what happened in the past with their car show and finding trustees with deep pockets. All so they can squander that money on a very bloated administrative staff.

Yes that's a Matano. sketch. He and I were classmates at ACCD. He graduated semester before me, went to GM, couldn't get a work visa, went to Holden, down under, lefty there and went to BMW. Left there and wound up at Mazda, and he and Mark did the Miata.

The other sketches are by Boyke Boyer, former Ford designer.

That's Tom behind Keith Teter in the ACCD catalog. Image Unavailable, Please Login

CIA has always been a great source of talent. Gerry Hirschberg, Andy Hanzel, John Shettler, Pat Murray, Dave Ross, Kirk Bennion and a number of others, including yourself. Ford had several CIA grads as well. can't speak to Chrysler.
Like many institutions, it ebbs and flows. Some classes were great, others not so much. Timing and fate played equal parts as well. There is a trend now to look at the nontraditional design schools to avoid the sameness coming out of CCS & ACCD. Timing is everything.

But what did you see as the spool up time for a new hire designer from the non-traditional schools?

All over the map. My 35 yrs there, the bulk of talent came from CCS, ACCD, CIA & Pratt. There were several outliers from the RISD, Georgia Tech, Wayne State Univ., Michigan State!, Univ of Mich., Cincinnati. Towards the end of my tenure we were hiring from Europe & Asia. So we were getting the RCA (UK), Coventry (UK), Pfortzheim (Germany), Strate (France) &Hongik (Korea), and some from Australian design schools. I've probably missed some, but those were the prominent design schools providing talent. Being on the portfolio team, I got to see almost all of them and their portfolios.
Each student had his or her learn time. Some had a steep learning curve, others jumped right in and started to contribute. Depended on the individual.

As for BMW Design, I remember being told that they had long gestation periods of the clay sitting in the studio. This allowed them to keep tweaking the design to get their perfect proportions.

The guys that worked for the Germans at that time would tell us the same thing. They would spend a great deal of time refining and refining.
We on the other hand would spend time searching for the theme.

A streamlined Honda knock-off from 15 years ago? That reminds me a lot of the proposed 2nd generation NSX that got deep-sixed around 2008.

AI definitely has it's own (bizarre) opinions on wheels. I'm surprised that the AI didn't pick up on using the Maserati trident symbol incorporated at the end of each wheel spoke on the starting proposal.

anyone here watch sketch monkey you tube channel? used to do some great photoshop work that was popular but recently switched to straight car reviews that are not getting any views. what happened? used to love his backdating and updating different models along with comparing how he would design a car vs the original designer. miss those.

I posted a number of his sketch/correction videos over the years. He hasn't been as active lately. His critiques often seemed random to me where he would make changes for change sake.
Many people are watching Frank Stephanson's design sketching videos it would appear. Berk Kaplan also has a YouTube channel devoted to sketching.

You should see the original sketch made for that Honda... its like a Lambo Huracan.
That curvy AI car reminds me of 'Ferrari World Design Contest' designer Samir's make.

All in all a good effort -

Front end is quite nice. Front arches overly large & don't match the scale of rears. I think this needs smaller wheels (horror!) to drop the fenderline enough to bring the greenhouse to reasonable proportion.
