612 Brake Hell

Hello All

I was informed by my Ferrari dealer (who has always been super great), that my brake caliper pistons have eroded (pictures they sent clearly show this).
My issue is that I am told that the pistons are not available as an individual part and that the whole Brembo caliper needs replacing, taking 5 months to build (I should add that the carbon discs are fine).

A little bit surprising to say the least.
Repair costs aside, 5 months to fix brakes!! Despite loving the car, my Ferrari ownership is over as brakes are commodity components and life is too short unless there is another path forward.

Any ideas apart from Eurospares etc..

What are they quoting you as a repair cost?

I'm guessing a competent independent could do the job much faster and much cheaper. However, Ferrari would void your warranty. Oh wait, a 612, ......... you don't have a warranty!

 

Talk to some aftermarket brake specialists. Their is some upgrade kits.

If she has CCMs, Hill Engineering has stainless piston kits.

I have installed a few sets. It is unforgivable that Ferrari used such garbage brakes. The plated aluminum pistons cannot take normal element exposure without disintegrating. Absolute trash. They were intended for a race car, not a street car. They have no external seals to even try to protect the pistons from exposure.
Who cares if it make the calipers a few ounces lighter? It is a street car and no one is capable of noticing the difference.

 

Yet. They will get bad enough the pistons cannot retract and the brakes will drag worse and worse.

 

We deal with several brake companies. I have no problem checking for you and seeing what I can come up with if you're interested.

 

Nothing to check for. Put Hill Engineering stainless pistons in them and put the Brembo aluminum pistons in the garbage where they belong.

Corvettes had the same problem, only it was the caliper itself that corroded. Be glad you do not need the calipers sleeved like the Corvettes.

 

Ouch, that would hurt.

 

Stainless Steel Brake built their business doing that. As I understand it they no longer repair brakes. Liability got too high.

 

I think the Corvette problem was likely owners not changing brake fluid regularly. Sleeved 65-82 calipers are still available, but no telling who is doing it now. I put a set of the Stainless Steel Brake calipers on my father's 73 Corvette.

Can u see if they are corroded by visually inspecting before the brakes start sticking??
