Merry Christmas everyone. I hope that you are having a wonderful holiday weekend.

For my winter project, I decided to replace my warn suspension bushings, and shocks in my 1984 308 GTS QV. I decided while I have it apart to go ahead and rebuild the steering rack, and install a quick ratio rack and pinion. Today, I pulled the rack out, and started to look at it. It seems weird to me. It is a TRW rack, and it is very different than the other racks that I have seen in pictures on other posts. The rack shaft is also a different diameter (23mm) than the new one I got (21mm). Is this an aftermarket rack that someone has put in at some point, or were there just different racks used on some of the cars?

Really confused and Trying to decide what to do here... buy another rack? Scrap the rebuild...?

    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

That looks pretty much like the one I pulled out of my 328 last year,,
Can't comment or remember the shaft diameter.

You comment made me think... I just checked, and there is a different part number for the fast rack for a 328. I wonder if my car is late enough that it got the 328 rack instead of the one they used for the 308.

    Toby,

Looks like we're on parallel paths here- did you see my thread titled "85 Refresh Time....?

My rack is totally different than your TRW unit as well, and mine is an 85 (duh).

For the record, I was going to go the fast rack rebuild route as well but I read enough threads about troubles with rebuilt racks that I just went the easy route and bought the full replacement unit for $200. I guess it depends on what you're planning to do with your car. Mine will see light canyon duty and mostly freeway runs to the office for exercise, so I'm going full stock rebuild. It's pretty dang comfortable as is, and while I'd love a rebuilt quicker ratio rack I don't know what the long term durability will be like.

    Just me .02

    Cheers,

    Warren.

Thanks Warren. I will check out your thread. Things are always harder than it seems they should be.
