I am refurbishing my suspension on my 79 308 GTB.
I bought a set of the Koni classics. I got them from Tire Rack. They did not come with the little metal clips that hold the metal collar that the spring sits in. Are they supposed to include that or am I supposed to use the old one. I am reusing my springs as the car was lowered.

    Another really stupid question maybe.
How do you get the top mount off to add the collar and put the spring on and off?

Just overly cautious to not destroy anything.

    Thanks

I would take all of the parts to a shop and have them assemble the Konis and springs. You can then install them on the car.

Agreed. If a commercial quality spring compressor and experience with it is not available leave it to someone who knows how.

I don't think that the top is meant to come off. However, in another thread, it seems that Koni has made some design changes to their 308 shocks (so your old lower spring perch hardware may not fit). See this thread:

Can you post some pictures of your new shocks?

I did do some further snooping. I hadn't spent much time on it before. It appears that they now have a permanent stop for the spring collar to sit on, but I am sure the ends will have to be removed to slide the collar and spring on. I don't know how it comes apart but I can't imagine clamping the shaft to hold it. Any damage to the shaft would seem fatal.

And of course there is one little sheet with pictures but I can't decipher it.

Is the "permanent stop" is a solid continuous ring, or does it have a split in it (so it can be expanded)? In the other thread, it was called a "c-clip" (inferring that it has a split in it so that it can be removed, the lower perch slid on, and then the c-clip reinstalled).

Didn’t even think of that Steve. I did notice that it had a split. I will check that in the morning. I did notice that the shock body is tapered from the top. That would certainly make it a lot easier and makes sense when the other poster said he ruined the decal since it is on the bottom.

So it ends up that the collars for the rear shocks 1983 SP6 do not fit but the collars for the front shocks 1982 SP6 do fit. I assume you are correct Steve Magnussen about the ring is removable on both although I'm not sure how without scratching the crap out of the paint on the shock barrel.

Welcome to "design improvements" ;). I still think that they mangled things some when they moved the feature that retains the c-clip to the bottom of the lower spring perch and went to that more "solid" lower perch -- but don't know that for sure. If you can ever get them assembled, would love to see a shot of the old vs new side-by-side to see where the spring end surfaces are in relation to the end eyelets.

Steve I will lay them out as I take them off and reshoot after getting springs changed. If I wasn't reusing the springs it would be nice to see them completed side by side. I'll try and include some type of grid to at least a tape measure to get some kind of comparison.
I am having no luck at all trying to hear back from Koni. The other poster in the other post you referenced seems to have gotten response from them but me. CRICKETS
