I wonder if one can get this information using car registration data from individual state motor vehicle departments using the freedom of information act to request the data. This would give fairly accurate data for those cars still registered for road use but would miss those in museums etc.
Another source for this data would be car insurance companies but unsure whether this data is readily available from them or if they would even consider releasing that type of information which they may consider proprietary.

Yes, as explained on one of the posts in this thread.

It took 9 years to actively save up for a $120k car, and another 6 years to save up for a $180k car. That would be highly unusual for the majority of owners here.

On each journey, the Ferraris I could afford did not check as many boxes as other cars.

As in you feel the majority of owners are richer or poorer (for lack of a better term)?

I may make a 1%ers income, but still feel i revolve in a normal upper middle class world.

I'd be curious for a similar thread to ask combined value of cars..

    Under 200k
    200<500
    500<750
    750<1mm
1mm-3mm, etc.... which actually isnt all that much for many new car buyers. So add a few more steps.

Most appear to be much wealthier....they want a new Ferrari, they go get it. No planning, working multiple jobs, begging my primary employer for overtime, selling vacation time, etc. I greatly admire that.

I would be curious to see a poll as you describe.

Lease or finance is co-owner at best. Don't continue to make payments and see who the real owner is. Maybe more accurate to say that you have a financial interest. ;)

For modeling purposes, the % of factory output in the US may be below 1/3.

The info from the link below points to 27.5% of shipments in 2021 went to the Americas (assume this includes Canada, PR and everything down to Argentina) so maybe 22% in the US.

    https://www.statista.com/statistics/695949/total-number-of-car-shipments-made-by-the-italian-sports-car-company-ferrari-by-country-or-region/

For 2022 26% went to the Americas

    https://www.motor1.com/news/650529/ferrari-set-sales-record-in-2022/

On the ownership point, I would agree that leasing does not infer ownership, but a loan would for common parlance, noting that most home owners have financing.

All I can say is God bless all you cats with more than one Ferrari, and the fellow with the F40 / F50 and whatever else.. WOW !! Ive had quite a 25 year relationship with my 89 328 , kind of a labor of love in the sense of what Ive done to keep it as pristine as possible. At this point in time I dont see myself owning another, although I would love to have the money to own lets say a 488. I would have to say owning my 328 has been like a marriage, I think one in a lifetime is enough. My business does very well, but not 488 GTB well at this point. Im not and never will be willing to sell my 328 in order to put a down payment on another Ferrari, I just cant see myself without it. Im not sure if this is good or not, but my 328 has become part of who I am, if that makes sense. Another great topic / thread for sure.

I'll bet there is over 100k Ferraris floating around the north American market. Ferrari isn't exactly accurate with their production number reporting either. So let's also keep that in mind.

My post was to rustle the jimmies of the members who act too righteous to use financing.

Look if you're 21 and putting a Gallardo on 17 credit cards that is foolish, but if you have savings and using financing is a tool because because it's cheaper and more stable to have cash/investments and use OPM, then that's fine no matter how much you follow Dave Ramsey.

It always escapes me how buying a Ferrari with a loan is any different than buying a home with a mortgage. Yeah yeah yeah a house is an "asset" and you need to live somewhere. You can rent a house the same way that you buy one and can be underwater the same way any car can. "You don't need it".. and people don't NEED a 3500 square foot home with polished marble floors.. I financed my 360 and paid it off in full in half the loan timeline.

That's fine and well understood. My comment is that if there are other owners on the title than you are co-owner and not even an equal owner unless >= 50% paid. You don't own it until its paid for and that's just the way it works. And 'it' can be anything you finance.

Me too! I have mentioned since I was a young law student here that one of my life goals was to daily drive Ferraris. And since April 2016 I have consistently paced 4 days per week.

TwoSherpaz has one of the best collections I can imagine.

What’s with all the tedious crap arguing over the “loan” vs. “ownership”? Sheesh…

Possession is nine tenths, right? So give it up, word Nazis! :D

PS - I own all my vehicles free and clear - I’m just not trying to one up those who don’t.

What goes on the Carfax/vehicle history? If the car is leased and returned multiple times, it’s not considered a one owner car. Same for financing. Especially in the last few years where people have made money on new cars and upgrading for an enticing deal.

With the increase in production numbers, the number of owners is certainly growing up rapidly...
However, it's also sure that most owners have several Ferrari (although the multi-owners are not necessarily the most passionate). I think I read or heard somewhere (I can't remember where) that the average Ferrari owner has four; I also suspect Ferrari's marketing is targeting richer people with multiple cars rather than enthusiasts stretching their finances to get one.

Here's some simple math. Ferrari only used odd #s up to 75,000 which was reached in 1988 IIRC. They are currently closing in on 300K. So 300,0000 less 37,500 comes to 262,500 total production. Perhaps 25% came to the US which would be 66,625. Let's estimate that the average number of Ferraris per owner is 1.5. That would bring the number of owners to about 44K. My anecdotal observation is that most owners with multiple cars buy older ones. I think we can assume that new buyers mostly only have one. I owned three at one point but, with age, have cut back to one.

I’ve always tried to have one or two of the latest greatest just to experience what’s new and enjoy the hyper performance, then the older/classic cars which tend to just stick around longer if not permanently because I’ve got more of a connection to those for nostalgic reasons.

Similar to my math, though I guessed that (a) a third were US cars and (b) the average owner has 2.5. Which nets more like 35k owners. But I have no idea.

I know plenty of owners with more than one new model. FWIW, I'd actually have guessed owners were more likely to have multiple newish cars than classics, based both on my personal observations and the production numbers through the years. I'd guess that the lion's share of those 265k cars have been built since 2000. If 40% of owners have multiple cars (per Ferrari) they can't all (or even mostly) own multiple classics. There simply aren't enough out there!

Others have pointed this out in posts above but I recall an impromtu Factory tour in 1983, during which the fella said roughly 1/3 of annual production (which was approximately 2,500 cars in those days) went to the United States.

In late 1983, the cars on the production line were of many colors. A year later, the 308s and Mondials were mostly red. I commented on the change and was told that it was because of the popularity of Magnum PI. Hell, in November, 1984, there were Testarossas lined up in rows outside and every one of them was red!

when we are talking about classics and 288/f40/f50, I bet most are owned by a very few. I can’t imagine someone having a 275gtb and no other Ferraris, or a single 288 gto as the only Ferrari. Most belong to guys like @Twosherpaz. Heck even onesherpa probably has a few :)
