    Hi I have a 96 456 I’m working on that I am having trouble finding the procedure to remove the camshaft sprocket from the cams, the front cover, and the drive pulleys on the front cover. I’m trying to find specifications, special tools and torque specs on disassemble and reassemble on this Ferrari if anyone has any information that would be awesome I have read through the owners manual, but there’s not really give me the procedure for removing those components or repairing them. Thank you for your time.

    Hey Kyle,

    Saw your post on the FB group too..

    Lots of good info on this forum, you are in the right place.

    Those lower drive gears need a ringnut tool to remove in order to get the front cover off.

    Are you the shop doing the work or the owner? Lots of good research and tutorials if you are doing the work.

    I havent gone this deep on mine yet, so better heads than mine can hopefully help

    You can bump it with air gun if you can get it in place. You would need to put the belts back on...

    I could not as I have a larger aftermarket radiator with less clearance so I had to remove the cam with gear on, grip it in a vice with the old belt and bump away.

    You will need to remove the cams to replace the seals anyway right?

    Putting the gears back on and torquing them is a bit controversial. Search "matchbook."

    I ended up doing that method as well as something a little different.

    Removing the timing covers is not hard although you will need to break the rtv seal if its been done that way. I lightly tapped mine with a rubber mallet to loosen it up

    Just make sure you get all the bolts out. There is one bolt that holds the rear cam sensor cover to the cam cover that is easy to overlook.

    Its the bolt hole to the right of #22.

    Okay so little update I was about to get the front cover off and bearings replace and resealed back on the car. For the cam shaft pulleys I was able to get them off and back on again. If you guys want detailed information about it I can write it down. Also thank you everyone for your help

    I am curious of your methods. How did you get the gear off, then back on and retorqued?

    update about ready to start need fuel and i was wondering if anyone knew how to check or scan codes on a 96 456. also for a video i can make one of me explaining everything i have done but sadly it wont be super in depth because i was more focused on getting the engine together the right way and no mess anything up. for the cam shafts a guy on YouTube named daniel-san he talks about losing the camshaft caps and using paper to hold them in place. so i did exactly that after making sure it was at tdc and it worked for taking them off and retorqueing them.

    That is the "matchbook method." It works. I have also seen someone hold a spanner pronged wrench in the timing holes while someone else tightens the bolt. Looks to easy to screw that up. Another guy used a metal washer between the cam gears and clamped them together with vice grips. I think I might be ok with the latter if it was a solid copper washer or copper wedge. I use a copper penny (I forget the cut-off mint year) to wedge a motor cycle primary gear solid. That always worked great.

    The 2.7 motronic section is missing from the 456GT WSM, so I use the one from the 348/355 link below. Codes and setup are pretty much the same except we have 6/12 cylinders rather than 4/8. Remember Ferrari built this thing as two 6 cylinder motors welded together so you have two separate 6 cylinder fuel management systems.

    Little update waiting on thicker oil to come in. Had an over heating issue and I found the radiator sensor not working replaced it and now it will stay running cool and kick the fans on. So now waiting on oil and when the oil comes in I have a front oil seal to do because I nicked the new one
