Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login I would like to start a post to record my engine pull and ask questions to the knowledgeable crew around here as I remove parts and pieces. This engine is going to be a box of chocolates! No history records that I possess. I first removed the coolant reservoir tank and I already have my first question..... Image Unavailable, Please Login What is this? It sticks out like a sore thumb and my brain says something feels missing.
Air injection pump. Yes, items have been removed. May not be a bad thing pending what your state inspection rules are for older cars.
Chances are you’ve already seen this, but if not you will be interested in https://www.birdman308.com/service/engine/remove-engine.htm
https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/theiler-automobil-technik-customized-308-engine.614401/ I guess I will start to see what Theiler customizations were done besides the beefy engine top support. I hope he replaced the sodium-filled valves!

Can I just bridge the 2 connections in the wiring loom and plug the 2 openings with brass plugs for a clean look?
This looks different with the 328. There is a cover attached with 3 bolts with, I think, a water hose connected to it that leaves under the delco. Sorry i can't help you better. But you can undoubtedly help me I see in the last photo that you have removed the fender on the left. Can you take a photo of the open space where the wiring harness goes into the interior, this would save me a lot of time and useless fiddling with the interior cladding when installing the camera wiring and checking the antenna cables that have something wrong with them
not sure if this is the view angle you are looking for.....one wiring harness is going in at the upper left bulkhead aluminum panel Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thank you but don't think that's the one i am looking for Should be a lot thicker considering the one I mean is the one that ultimately goes to all the rear lights Maybe 308 and 328 are differend?
I am not quite there yet with a better view of where the large wire loom goes into the bulkhead. Hopefully soon for me as I peel back parts and pull the engine out! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Slowly removing parts and documenting as I go - hopefully, I can gather something at the end to show the steps I took to pluck out the engine. I am taking off many more parts than needed to get the engine out, but this poor car needs every bolt inspected. My question for the day.......what is this plug on the long pipe to the front exhaust manifold (1980 GTSi)? I have pulled the muffler and the 2 cats. More smog-related? thank you Dave - I guess the running theme with this car is lotta deleted emissions parts. I wish the exploded diagrams set would have the 1980 emissions parts illustrated. You may know this......can you remove the rear exhaust manifold out of the car? I unbolted the emergency brake cabling mechanism to clear a better path to pull out through the bottom, but even holding my tongue just right I could not get the manifold to come out through the top or bottom! On my 77 car with the alloy covered manifolds, it came out the top. Couldn't figure out a way to get it out the bottom. But first I needed to remove the coolant header tank, engine brace, and the two lower long studs for the brace bracket. It then took some artful manipulation to get it around the air pump mounting points on the cam cover. Now I have headers without the alloy cover, it's so much easier to get them in/out.
Thank you for the knowledge - I will remove the engine brace and squeeze out the top. Damn filthy engine.
I recently pulled the engine out of my 308, you pretty much just disconnect everything from the engine mechanical, plumbing and electrical. I have seen it done with the oil cooler still attached but I chose to remove mine so I didn't damage it. Leave the headers loose in the engine bay, then secure a strap around the front cylinder head and then lift straight up, it will tilt the engine down enough that the differential swings out from under the boot floor. I left engine mounts attached to the engine and was extra careful not to smash the back window. It took 10 minutes to have out after six hours of disconnecting everything carefully. Good luck! Image Unavailable, Please Login When I removed the rear bank exhaust headers it exposed the exhaust valves. I grabbed my flexible magnetic pickup tool and determined that this valve stem/head base was not magnetic. Can I put money on the table that this is not a sodium-filled valve and possibly an updated SS valve?
You can get a pdf copy of the 222/81 SPC for 1981-82 US version 308B/S here (which for the emission stuff is identical to your 1980 US version): https://www.dropbox.com/s/6trvn000tscatc8/Spare Parts Catalogue 81-82 US version 308i 222_81.pdf?dl=0
Yes, it's a shame that none of the online F part suppliers seem to have an SPC available for any of the US version 2Vi cars. I got that copy of 222/81 from a gracious FChatter who shared it with me, and, of course, I can't remember who to thank them again directly -- but thank you!
